The famed Danish brand of plastic building blocks has taken the world by storm and it is now estimated that there are around 5 LEGO pieces for every person on Earth. So with them being so prevalent, why are they so pricey?Well, with tie-in sets to the latest movies, franchises, and video games, the licenses can be costly but there are some sets that just boggle the mind when you hear about the price due to their rarity. Take, for example, Mr. Gold, who does not make our top 10 as he is not a set but a mini figure but he is a prime example of why some LEGO can reach insane amounts. to print off an exclusive certificate. Given that a random mini figure pack will cost you about $3, it may shock you that the most expensive Mr. Gold was then sold for  $1,249.99.

With that in mind, here we look at the most expensive LEGO sets. 10. LEGO Creator Green Grocer A complex model of a food market that had different rooms and facades, it originally sold for $149.99 with a swing open front so you could see into the buildings and even a fire escape out the back of it to add to the realism. 9. LEGO Star Wars X-Wing Fighter The collectability of Star Wars memorabilia combined with how collectible LEGO is makes for many of the Star Wars sets reaching obscene prices, especially those that are retired. The retired sets are usually the ones that started off costing quite a lot in the first place and so not selling so many. The X-Wing is a prime example of this as it features 1,304 pieces and is intricate and costly so few sets exist with all pieces in place. 8. LEGO Star Wars Rebel Blockade Runner Like the X-Wing, this set was part of a series called 'The Ultimate Collector Series' so LEGO knew their customer base was going to be serious collectors from the off and there is probably a deliberate move to make them quite rare.

Originally selling for £199.99, you're likely to have to pay around ten times that now. 7. LEGO Creator Grand Carousel An incredibly intricate set that actually has carousel horses that bob up and down, it really spins and plays music upon completion. It was this intricacy that made it hard to come by as it was costly and had lots of easily lost parts. As such it now fetches a tidy sum. 6. LEGO Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer Star Wars continues to dominate the list with this whopping 3,104 piece set that is almost 3 feet long when completed making it the longest of any LEGO Star Wars set produced yet. Size, scale, and rarity all add to cost and then you have to figure out where to put it. With the most pieces of any LEGO set, the Taj Mahal is a scaled down representation of the famous Indian icon and mimics its grand arches and minarets in miniature form. Not that miniature, though, it still has 5,922 pieces and retailed for $299.99. 4. LEGO Star Wars Y-Wing Attack Fighter

Back to the Star Wars sets and the disparity between prices for this set is quite interesting but again it comes from the Ultimate Collectors series and has 1,473 pieces to it. Originally selling for $119.99. 3. LEGO Make & Create Eiffel Tower 1:300 Scale A whopping set that is absolutely massive in size as it sits 1:300 in scale to the real Eiffel tower. It had lots of fiddly bits to lose and was so large it was hard to find anywhere to put it. Retailing for $199.00, it is no longer on sale but you can pick up a smaller version for $34.99. 2. LEGO Statue of Liberty Sculpture LEGO's version of Lady Liberty garners a massive range in price on Amazon and auction sites now but the 2,882 piece originally retailed for $198.99 and comes in at two and a half feet tall when complete. 1. LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector's Millenium Falcon Of course, the most expensive set had to be a Star Wars one and given that it retailed at a costly $500 in the first place, it is no wonder it is in such high demand now as few would cough up that sort of money making it quite a rare set.

Made up of 5,195 pieces, and weighing more than 22 pounds, it is true to the film specifications of the spaceship and is incredibly intricate and detailed. It’s a Christmas gift from LEGO in the way of BRAND NEW LEGO Star Wars sets available NOW to celebrate the launch of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
