I figured it might be of interest that I just completed "instructions" (I was too lazy to do any CAD, simply took extensive breakdown photographs) and a parts list. The parts list is a little different from what I show in the instructions (when I use a 1x2 tile and a 1x1 tile next to each other I wanted to use a 1x3 tile, so I list that in the inventory).
Also, when I built the original thing I used a lot of parts in colors that I didn't need to, so there could be some more simplification as well.Suffice to say, it's not perfect and it's nowhere close to a real Lego set, but I think it will do.It may not be perfect, but it is better than the real Lego sets—including the last 2012 model. You can sometimes get them for $15-20 Canadian (Winners, for example), and they have about 150 pieces that work nicely for a variety of models.
That’s how the books work: you get instructions for building about four pairs of models (eight total) with the same 150 bricks. I wanted to build a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter from the pieces in one of these books (ISBN 978-0756663117). I realize that it would be better with some other bricks, probably with other bricks that I already have, but I like the challenge of producing an alternative model from a single set. It was re-released as a Walmart promotional in March of 2011 and as a promotion with The Sun on the 14th May 2011 in the UK. The X-Wing has four wings and a main body. The wings can be adjusted individually and moved into an "X" shape or parallel with each other and the ground. There is a piece representing a blaster at the tip of each wing. The engines are at the base of each wing and clustered close to the body of the ship. At the back of the engines are four red studs as the thrusters. A grey stud is placed just behind the cockpit, representing an Astromech Droid. The nose of the ship is long and white with a grey tip.
