New kid on the blocks: Lego Worlds game challenges Minecraft Danish plastic-block giant fancies its luck in 3D virtual arena Lego has created a block-by-block world-building computer game to take on the Microsoft-owned Minecraft series. Lego Worlds is now available via Steam for Windows PCs, and allows players to use virtual plastic bricks to construct and alter landscapes, buildings, forests, mountains, and yeah, you get the gist. "In a galaxy of procedural worlds made entirely from Lego bricks, will you explore environments filled with adventure, then alter them? Discover secrets and treasures, then play with them? Create your own models, then make a world your own?" Lego asks gamers on Steam. Lego stops short of asking players if they dream of creating penis-shaped structures. Apparently, that was a major problem for Lego Universe, which was an earlier attempt to create a world-building game using Lego bricks. "We were asked to make dong detection software for Lego Universe," ex-Lego programmer Megan Fox said on Twitter before the weekend.
"We found it to be utterly impossible at any scale. Players would hide the dongs where the filtering couldn't see, or make them only visible from one angle. The moderation costs of Lego Universe were a big issue in general." Worries over naughty erections have never bothered Minecraft, it seems. All that aside, youngsters will be torn: they love Lego, but they also love the wildly popular Minecraft. Lego Worlds is so obviously in direct competition with the latter title, the block-based game that grew and grew until Microsoft bought it in 2014 for $2.5bn. Minecraft was the most-watched game on YouTube in the past 10 years. Last year, the Mojang-developed title invaded Lego's turf when Denmark's government put together a scale map of the Scandinavian country using Minecraft. Building worlds out of pretend bricks is our job, the Danish biz was probably thinking. Don't expect Minecraft's creators to sweat much over the incursion from Lego. Since the sale of the game to Redmond, Markus "Notch" Persson has cashed out and cut ties with the company he founded, citing the overwhelming fan interest in the game.

With Lego already making loads of official Minecraft playsets, you’d think the company would avoid stepping on the insanely popular building game’s toes. But apparently that’s not the case, because today Lego Worlds was officially announced, and the only real difference between playing it and Minecraft is that you get to build with actual Lego pieces. Described by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The Lego Group as a “limitless collection of procedurally generated worlds”, Lego Worlds lets players customize giant pre-built landscapes, assemble their own brick by brick, or use special tools that make it easier to create giant structures in the game. In addition to building worlds, players will also be able to customize Minifigures, unlock vehicles and animals, and even have access to real world Lego sets right in the game. The satisfaction of assembling all those plastic bricks by hand might be gone, but players could amass quite a virtual Lego collection without needing a basement full of shelves to display them.
Lego Worlds is available on STEAM Early Access starting today for gamers eager to try an official Lego Minecraft-like experience, and don’t mind tip-toeing around various bugs while the game move towards a wider release. However, it’s important to note that the game doesn’t currently include multiplayer support, meaning you won’t be able to share your creations with friends, or download someone else’s meticulously-assembled world. This is one of the features that made Minecraft so incredibly popular, so why doesn’t Lego Worlds have it from day one? Maybe it has something to do with the problems the company had keeping Lego Universe free of penises so that it remained a friendly place for kids—it could very well be a problem that hasn’t actually been solved yet. Just make sure you don’t let those pesky Troublemakers get near it! They chew the wiring and smell funny. Build brick-by-brick with confidence and populate worlds with a variety of structures to create a masterpiece, as you embark on your creative adventure to become a Master Builder. Have you ever wanted to build an entire castle for your pet T-rex? Or a vast water park that defies gravity where you can ride and play with your pet shark? Well, now you can anyway!
