When Minecraft came out, I heard a lot of people describe as sort of like virtual Lego. Now, there’s a game for which that description is even more apt: Lego Worlds, an open world building game that lets users create using virtual Lego bricks, and interact with the world as a customizable minifigure avatar. The launch trailer for the title is above, but it’s actually already available via Steam’s Early Access program; you can get in on the beta via the Steam store here, and dive into an early playable version of the game before its full-scale launch. Even the structure of the launch resembles Minecraft; developer Mojang made early versions of Minecraft available to the community far ahead of shipping the first stable version of the game, and that prototypical launch actually paved the way for the entire concept of Steam’s Early Access program. Lego Worlds is built by TT Games, which also creates the popular series of franchise-based adventure story titles for consoles and PCs.
The game includes open-form brick-by-brick customizations, large-scale tools to modify entire landscapes without having to get so granular, and inclusion of pre-defined building sets for making virtual kits that more closely approximate the types of thematic sets Lego ships for its real-world building blocks. Commercially-sold play sets will actually have in-game equivalents, in fact, and some of this will be exclusively unlocked for Early Access players, with more to ship after the proper launch. Multiplayer isn’t included in this version, but is planned for later updates.Microsoft's Minecraft has new competition. The game is part of Steam Early Access, a beta channel of sorts for games that are still in production. TT Games, which developed Lego Worlds, said it wanted to get feedback from the gaming community before a final launch. "Lego Worlds embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades, on a digital platform that delivers an entirely new type of experience with the beloved bricks," Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, said in a statement.
"From the brick-by-brick editor, to discovering an expansive range of items, characters and creatures to populate your worlds—the creative possibilities are endless." In Lego Worlds, players enter existing worlds, which they can then alter (brick by brick or via "prefabricated structures") to create something of their own. "Entire worlds and creations are brought to life with characters and creatures that interact with each other as well as the player in unexpected ways," the announcement said. "From helicopters to dragons, motorbikes to bears, there are always interesting ways for players to explore the vast worlds and discover hidden treasures." Some players who unlock in-game rewards will get physical Lego sets, though details were not released. Future versions of the game will also add multiplayer and sharing features. The game will inevitably draw comparisons to Minecraft, which also takes place in a brick-like universe. Some of the most basic of activities in Minecraft involve collecting blocks of material and moving them around to create structures and tools.
So, elements of the game end up appearing like blocky virtual Legos. Lego will have some tough competition, though. Just last month, YouTube announced that people watch videos about Minecraft more than any other game on the platform. It ran into a little trouble in Turkey, but recently branched out to include female characters and the residents of Springfield.Sandbox title ‘LEGO Worlds’ is coming to Xbox One, PC, and PS4 on February 24, 2017. The title has been available via Steam Early Access since back in 2015. This title will be joined by ‘LEGO City: Undercover‘ and the recently released ‘Lego: DC Super Heroes Mighty Micros‘.“In LEGO Worlds, players will go on an exciting journey to become a Master Builder, in an open-world made completely of LEGO-built environments,” said Jonathan Smith, head of production at TT Games. “Whether customizing characters, exploring in vehicles, building structures, or discovering an expansive range of items, characters and creatures throughout the worlds, there’s the freedom to create anything imaginable.”
Warner Bros. is also releasing a DLC pack called Lego Agents, with features extra characters, weapons and vehicles inspired by the Lego Agents physical toys. The DLC will be exclusively available for PS4 in the first 90 days, coming to Xbox One and PC after that.Lego Worlds, an open-ended, third-person Minecraft look-a-like published by Warner Bros. and developed by Traveller’s Tales, is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox. No pricing for either the full PC release or the console versions of the game was announced, though it’s not unlikely to assume the price will somewhat from its prerelease price tag. Traveller’s Tales also announced a DLC pack entitled “Lego Agents,” which features various weapons, characters, and vehicles inspired Lego’s Agents toy line.
The Lego Agents pack will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 for its first 90 days after release. Lego Worlds promises procedurally generated worlds made of Lego bricks where players can adventure, seek treasures, discover secrets, and build to their heart’s content. While the game hasn’t made many headlines, based on nearly 8,000 Steam user reviews the general consensus among gamers is “very positive.” And video games in the Lego universe have traditionally been well received, with the most entry, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, receiving scores in the high 70s.
