FAQs and Contact Us 2017 Challenge: Monuments Men The National WWII Museum Robotics Challenge is an exciting opportunity for 4th through 8th grade students to develop 21st century skills and participate in active problem solving all based on real-life scenarios from WWII. Focused on the enduring themes of innovation, teamwork, community, and cooperation, the robotics program at The National WWII Museum provides a springtime competition opportunity for both established teams and newcomers to the field of student robotics.
The challenge uses the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® system on the standard 4’ x 8’ playing field. The theme of the 2017 Challenge is Monuments Men. This year’s challenge celebrates the dedication, creativity, and courage of those who worked to protect Europe’s cultural heritage during WWII. Allied forces and citizens across Europe worked before, during, and after invasions to identify, protect, and restore vital buildings, artworks, and other cultural artifacts. The Challenge includes the robot mission, a team project, and a values poster. Teams will program robots to identify, protect and restore cultural artifacts and landmarks. They will also design, test, and document the construction of a bridge, and design a poster to describe what it takes to solve big problems. Complete details will be provided after registration. A maximum of 10 students and 2 adult coaches are allowed per team. The Challenge will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017 in The National WWII Museum’s US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center.
Cost, Materials and Registration With the $50 registration fee, each team will receive a 4'x8' full color mat and field set consisting of non-LEGO® items serving as the mission objectives. Teams supply LEGO MINDSTORMS® components and will need a 4’x8’ practice table. The Challenge includes the robot game and team projects. The 2017 Robotics Challenge is now full, and closed for registration. Student Travel – WWII Educational Tours High school and college students, learn the leadership principles that helped win WWII on a trip to France or during a weeklong residential program in New Orleans.
