As the other writers said, this is totally a matter of opinion. If you like functionality, look into Technic sets. Generally with Technic, the bigger the better. A large set will come with all sorts of mechanical pieces, motors, and maybe even pneumatics. By way of traditional LEGO, my personal favorite line is the Creator theme. I prefer this over themes like Ninjago or Chima because these sets are challenging builds, and they are something that everyone can appreciate. Finally, the LEGO set that I want the most right now is the Ferrari F40. By far the Galaxy Explorer - 1979 497 Galaxy Explorer (I'm still looking for one set) 928 Space cruiser and moonbase The set 497 was the US version, 928 for Europe: both sets have the same instruction & almost same box For further answers, see also the following question:What is the best LEGO set of all time? There are too many great sets to pick one and everyone will have their own opinion about what they like and don't like.  Plus with licensed sets there are elements like familiarity and nostalgia.

One of my favorite sets from childhood was Fort Legoredo.I was a big fan of the western sets and had probably all of them.  I also liked the Pirates a lot.  I don't think anything will ever top Fort Legoredo in my heart. However, I have gotten some recent sets that are pretty good.  My favorite of late is the LEGO Brand Retail Store. It's an exclusive set, so the rarity makes it even greater to own.  It's not all that impressive on its own, but for real LEGO collectors and fans, it's awesome to have your very own LEGO Store!I also really like the Minecraft sets, and my favorite of them is The First Night.  It really gives you the quintessential Minecraft feel.  But all the sets generally pair well with each other and are easy to mix and match because Minecraft and LEGO are very similar.I have been disappointed with the newest Pirates sets.  They don't feel like they compare with the old Pirates.  They're bigger and flashier, but it feels like they're missing something.  They might have too much going on and not enough soul.

I really enjoy the sand green cacti and all the minifigure detail. This set would fit right in with that Lone Ranger theme that came and went really quickly when the movie tanked.Mill Run, Pa. – July 24, 2009 – The new Fallingwater LEGO set was introduced today at Fallingwater, the internationally renowned Frank Lloyd Wright house in Mill Run, Pa.

The Fallingwater LEGO set joins together two cultural icons – the Frank Lloyd Wright masterwork and the beloved toy brick. It is the latest addition to the LEGO Architecture series, which includes the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Guggenheim Museum and other famous landmarks such as New York’s Empire State Building and Chicago’s Sears Tower. The Fallingwater LEGO set consists of 811 pieces and has dimensions of 6x7x10 inches. It was designed by Adam Reed Tucker, an architectural artist and president of Brickstructures Inc., which developed the entire LEGO Architecture series. “My hope is that my whimsical use of the LEGO Brick as an elegant and sophisticated medium transcends its identity as a simple toy to make one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s greatest achievements come to life for all to take away and enjoy,” said Tucker. Tucker introduced the new LEGO set today at Fallingwater with Doug Volker, director of licensing and product development for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater and vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

In addition to showcasing the new, commercially available LEGO set, Tucker unveiled a large LEGO model of Fallingwater that was displayed previously at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry. “It was the vision, passion and creative desire of Adam Reed Tucker to capture the essence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous buildings, including Fallingwater, using the medium of the LEGO brick that brought this partnership into being,” said Volker.   About the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) enhances the region’s quality of life by protecting and restoring exceptional places. A nonprofit conservation organization founded in 1932, WPC was responsible for the founding of six state parks and has conserved nearly 225,000 acres of natural lands and waterways. The Conservancy owns and operates Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Mill Run, Pa. that symbolizes people living in harmony with nature. In addition, WPC enriches our region’s cities and towns through 140 community gardens and greenspaces that are planted with the help of 8,300 volunteers.
