NEW SEALED LEGO Creator Emerald Night Train set (10194) in BoxAmazon Prime Video has been in India for a month and I decided to finally sign up in order to find out what in their seemingly large library might interest a car or bike enthusiast. Unfortunately, car movies aren’t quite the gold standard for cinema. You have to make do with explosions, car chases and gravity-defying stunts in place of a great storyline that actually captures how most petrolheads connect with their rides. For instance, why hasn’t someone already made a film about the Zen motorcyclist (played by Royal Enfield’s Sid Lal) living in the Himalayas and leading lost motorists back to civilisation? Because it’s so much more important to make yet another Fast and Furious film about loving your family – that’s why. So while this list doesn’t yet feature my absolutely original and yet to be scripted movie, let’s dive right into what you can stream legally in India, courtesy of Amazon Prime. We did not even know that Amazon had a video streaming site until we heard that Jeremy Clarkson and team were moving from Top Gear and developing an Amazon Prime original series.

The Grand Tour pretty much follows in the footsteps of Top Gear (which now is hosted by Matt Le Blanc). The only downside is that while the ensemble is the same, it’s not as British as before – even the opening credits featuring Johnny Nash’s I Can See Clearly Now is a little underwhelming. The episodes follow a format similar to Top Gear though – the most notable ones feature an Aston Martin Vulcan as the hosts train for the special forces, and a typical Top Gear-like session with a Porsche 911 GT3 RS taking on a BMW M4 GTS. Comedian Jimmy Carr also makes an appearance. This six-episode series is a Southern American (read Deep South) adventure with a plot straight from a Western. But what it is is actually ‘darkly comic swamp noir’. There’s even some buried treasure involved. This Sundance entry makes it to this list owing to the lovely retro makes and models featured in the car chase sequences – right from the word go. The main ‘character’ is a 1973 Volkswagen Station Wagen – it fits right into the landscape!

This is clearly the Citizen Kane of car movies – the best that we could find up till now. The plot surrounds a heist, skipping across Europe and America and even involves the manipulation of the world’s largest traffic jam. While the cast includes Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham, the real stars are the cars that feature in all those lovely explosions and chase sequences. The movie heavily showcased the 2003 Mini Cooper S but the freightliners manage to steal the show on the roads too. Now, I am not saying that Michael Bay, as a director, is bad at his job, but the YouTube channel Screen Junkies has labelled him as ‘most likely to masturbate to an explosion’. If I were to summarise a Transformers film, it would be thus – exploding building, explosion in space, exploding car, flying car culminating into an explosion, car exploding into an autobot, and credits roll. But hey, they formula seems to have worked for four films that were global blockbusters.

And who am I to argue with the cash registers. Also, who cares when the yellow Chevrolet Camaro (Bumblebee) and the blue and red Peterbilt 379 pick-up truck (Optimus Prime) look so frikkin’ awesome on screen – even though the camera seems to be moving all over the place without quite focussing on either one of them for more than a millisecond. Sure, you’re used to CGI generated action sequences, but there’s something old-world about stunts that don’t depend on special effects. Based in a fictional, post-apocalyptic world where the earth is just on large desert (appropriately called the Wasteland), Mad Max delivers all the thrills and punches of a car movie, along with engaging characters and a great story (Michael Bay, please note). Complementing the old-timey action scenes are the rides – the likes of a 70s Kawasaki Z 1000 and a worn out Ford Falcon. This one is a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither should you. First off, the story is based on Elvis Presley impersonators robbing a casino.

And just like The King himself, the cars used for the getaway are just as grand. There’s a 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, a 1998 Dodge Ram and a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice, to name a few. The film itself starts with the protagonist Kurt Russell catching a kid trying to steal the air valve caps off the wheels of his old Cadillac. Jamie Foxx plays a taxi driver held hostage by a contract killer (Tom Cruise) as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles. That 1995 Ford Crown Victoria ends up seeing some things it shouldn’t have.
