SWNSThe Beetle is one of the most popular and iconic cars of all time with more than 21 million built.In 1977 Volkswagen decided to build 300 ‘Last Edition’ models to commemorate production coming to an end at its Wolfsburg factory in Germany.The 1200L was painted Diamond Silver Metallic and fitted with a Marine Blue velour interior.Number 167 of 300 was bought in January 1978 by a Mr Ellis of Hailey, Hertfordshire, who left the Beetle with his Volkswagen dealer who put it on show.After a couple of years he eventually took delivery of it but didn’t drive it, instead displaying it at his office.The car was later bought by Bernie Ecclestone who kept the car in his huge private collection, again never driving it.
I’ve not come across a Beetle like this before As a result, the car has only been driven 63 miles in its 37-year history and has been described as what “may well be the finest and most original example in existence”.Bonhams will be auctioning the Beetle off on December 10 at its collector’s cars sale at the RAF Museum in Hendon, London.They have given the car, which has never been registered, a guide price of £12,000 to £18,000 - this is around twice the price of a standard Beetle.Rob Hubbard, a motorcar specialist at Bonhams, said: “I’ve not come across a Beetle like this before. You can also access the interior via an easily removable roof section. There’s a handlebar for each door on the inside and out. There are fading edges and rounded tire enclosures. There are wing-mounted turn signals. There are pieces in this set you’ve likely never encountered before – have a peek at those tail lights to see what I mean. You’ll have truly unique pieces like the VW circle brick, and stickers that can be placed on the back window for ultimate surf-ready action. There’s a bit of cloth, as well – that’s a fabric beach towel. This model is over 11-inches high, 10-inches long, and 4-inches wide. It’s made up of 1,167 pieces and is age rated at 16+.
