LEGO has officially announced The LEGO Batman Movie Collectible Minifigures (71017) over on their social media channels. As expected, there are 20 minifigures to collect in the series and they will be available starting on January 1. According to reports, these particular minifigures will be exclusive to this series and will not be in any regular sets. The characters in the series include: Clan of the Cave Batman Now that’s a lotta Batmans! 2017 is going to be a big year not only for LEGO, but also for caped crusaders with an affinity for bats. In February, The LEGO Batman Movie is going to hit theaters, and if the newly revealed LEGO minifigures are any indication, that film is going to be a much deeper dive into Batman’s mythology than anyone realized. Over on the LEGO Facebook page, 20 new minifigures from The LEGO Batman Movie were unveiled, including several characters who have barely even appeared in the Batman comics. That includes the Mime, the Eraser, March Harriet, and Zodiac Master—none of whom are exactly well known names among comic book villains.
Even hardcore comic fans would be hard pressed to identify them. Naturally, not every Bat-villain is bound for glory like the Joker and Harley Quinn—both of whom are represented here as well—but it is nice to see some of the mid-level villains like Calculator, Catman, and King Tut lined up for figures inspired by their classic comic book costumes. And, of course, LEGO didn’t identify every character coming in this wave of minifigures, so there are a few that we aren’t sure about. Like the below male figure holding a can of Shark Repellent—a clear callback to the Batman ’66 live-action film. But he sure doesn’t look like Bruce Wayne. Or perhaps it’s someone new? And there are also several iterations of the Batman to be found, including Vacation Batman, Bat Caveman, Tooth fairy Batman, and our personal favorite, Heavy Metal Batman, whose costume seems to be inspired by the band KISS: You can find pics of the rest of the figures in the gallery below.

Speaking of Batman, let’s look at that Justice League footage once more, shall we?The next line of Lego’s blind-bagged minifigures is all about the upcoming Lego Batman Movie—and just like everything we’ve seen of both the film and the Lego sets so far, it’s looking both absolutely delightful and jam-packed with goofy reference to decades of Bat-pop culture. The full set of 20 minifigures—available, as ever with the collectable minifigs line, as individual blind-bags—features some deep cut references to Bat-lore, specifically relating to members of Batman’s extensive rogue gallery that we know will make cameo appearances in the movie, judging by recent trailers. There’s classics like the Red Hood, a version of the Joker in his Arkham Asylum jumpsuit, and even a Nurse Harley Quinn, but then there’s amazing obscure characters like King Tut, the Calculator, March Harriet, and the Eraser.
Then there’s some of the hilarious different Batmen (and Batgirls) we’ll be getting too, from Glam Metal Batman, to Lobster-Lovin’ Batman, to Caveman Batman. Some of the accessories. For those who don’t know how the minifigure sets work, they’re sets of 20 individually packaged minifigures in blind-buy bags. Earlier this year, LEGO did one just for Disney characters and now with LEGO Batman Movie set to open early next year, we’re getting one featuring a variety of Batman outfits and characters. The set gives us a pretty good indication of how wacky the movie is going to get with Lobster-Lovin’ Batman, Fairy Batman, Vacation Batman, and (my personal favorite) Glam Metal Batman. The set also includes deep cut Batman villains like King Tut, Calculator, Zodiac Master, and The Eraser. While a good portion of these figures will likely be fleeting cameos or background appearances in the actual film, it’s still nice that they’re being included.
