Each level in Story Mode has specific playable characters. At the end of each level, new characters become unlocked for Free Play, and new characters will become available to purchase with studs. Character Tips: Before jumping into Free Play it is strongly recommended that players pick up Sauron and Saruman as they are key to unlocking Collectibles that no characters unlocked during Story Mode can access (at least without special Mithril Items).

Sauron, who can access "Morgul" items - those items oozing darkness that makes other characters cower, can be found near Dol Goldur, only at night. Saruman, who can destroy shiny silver objects, can be found in Rivendell. Getting every character in the game will earn the "Quite a merry gathering" Achievement / Trophy". This will require forging all of the Mithril Treasure Items, which will require finding all 250 of the Mithtril Bricks. When all Mithril Treasure Items have been forged, Jimli The Blacksmith will become available for purchase. Lego The Hobbit Red Brick Guide All collectible red bricks can be found by completing a fetch quest for someone in the HUB world. You must find a character that is willing to give you a red brick in exchange for a Mithril item. To get their requested item you will need to locate the Blacksmith Design and then craft the item at the Blacksmiths workshop in Bree. Once you have crafted the item you can return and exchange it for a brick. Once a brick has been bought you can then turn it on by accessing the Extras menu.

From the High Pass statue, go to the right, then up the Lego mountain, then down the right side of it to a short ledge. Use Dori to grab the Lego hook and swing across to the cave opening on the other side. Go inside, then go to the left to find the narrow passageway going up. Follow that up to the quest giver, who will ask for the Mithril Shadow Blade. The Mithril Shadow Blade Schematic can be found near Weathertop. From the Weathertop statue, look for the large silver door in the rock wall nearby. The key can be found in a dig spot to the right. Once inside, shoot the targets in the water to raise platforms, then go across the water. Make loot donations to the three statues. Forge the Shadow Blade at the Blacksmith's Shop in Bree and return it to the quest giver to receive the Red Brick reward.
