When Jorgen Vig Knudstorp came in as Lego CEO in 2004, the company was struggling to give consumers what they wanted and effectively manage costs. Knudstorp finally brought fiscal responsibility to the Danish toy maker. He also tried something novel -- handing over creative direction to the core fans of the brand.Creativity combined with smart management ultimately saved the company. Lego Designer Mark Stafford, a fan who was recruited to help rethink the company's products, recently took to Reddit to share some of the behind-the-scenes details of the turnaround. When Stafford attended an AFOLCon (Adult Fans of Lego Convention) event in the United Kingdom a couple years ago, he heard Lego's chief marketing officer Mads Nipper speak about the terrible period between 1999 and 2003. Stafford writes of it: Here's an image from eBay of one of those motorized kits. The "fiber optics" are actually clear plastic tubes that connect to a battery-operated LED-light pack: That "Galidor" series he mentions with such disdain was based off a kid's show of the same name.

It involved so many new parts exclusive to each individual set that it resulted in awkward kits that did not comfortably fit into the Lego brand. Here's one being sold on eBay: The only reason Lego survived during this difficult time was due to the success of the Bionicle and "Star Wars" series. The first "Star Wars" Lego kits launched in 1999 and represented the company's first foray into licensed series, many of which became integral to the company, as this infographic from Wired illustrates. But Lego could not survive on several big sellers alone. Knudstorp, a former McKinsey consultant, took charge of the foundering company in 2004 and immediately got to work. After consolidation and streamlining, Knudstorp led a charge to put creative control into the hands of hardcore fans of the brand rather than in those of top designers who had skills but lacked a real understanding of Lego's history. The company held its first designer recruitment workshop in Sept. 2006. Stafford is one of the designers of the "Legends of Chima" series, which has an accompanying animated television show.

The kits feature plenty of new parts and characters but never venture beyond the classic Lego "feel" that designers like Stafford helped bring back to the brand. Here's an example, from Lego's website: For Stafford, the best proof of Lego's turnaround is captured by the new movie: Here's a trailer for the film: The 10 things in advertising you need to know today A top Russian official says relations with the US are at the lowest level since the Cold War THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE AUTOMOBILE 2016: Forecasts, trends, and analyses on the disruption of the automotive industry Why not write a brief review about how well ran on your hardware? The Resistance takes place inside the Resistance base, as you and your allies get ready to assault Starkiller Base. The mission starts out with you in a hangar.

Head to the bottom left corner first, and you will see a small container that you can cut a circle out of using a Lightsaber. Do so, and you will get your first Mini Kit of the mission! Once you have that, head over to the spaceship that's parked on the left side of the area. There will be a grapple hook on it. Using Finn, pull on it and from the debris, build a droid. For doing so, you will get a 1/3 counter. Next, continue heading north and you will see a computer console. Switch to C-3PO and activate it. Now switch to Leia, and command the troops to follow. Go right a few paces and have all 4 people grapple the crate and pull it down. Freeplay: After opening the door, take a Dark Force User into the room and smash the crates inside. From the rubble, you can build a Mini Kit. Once the crate is on the ground, jump up it and then jump onto the lifted pipe to pull it down into position. Once it's down, head to the right side of this room. There will be an enclosed area, and outside of it is a terminal.

Use C-3PO to activate it, then go in the room and using Finn, cut through the machine on the wall. Now get behind the huge frozen object and push it all the way out of the room. Freeplay: Enter this room as the Flametrooper and melt the ice that surrounds the Mini Kit to obtain it! Once you have pushed the block outside, smash everything in the center of the room if you hadn't already. From the debris, build the left option, which will complete a piece of track on the ceiling. Now switch to BB-8 and move the crane closer to the ice block. Smash what you built, and build the other option to get the crane all the way. You will then need to repeat this process a few more times until the ice block is on the opposite side. Once back on the ground, push it towards the broken X-Wing. As soon as it's all the way over, use BB-8 to fire up the X-Wing and melt the block. From the debris you can fix the pipe, then switch to BB-8 to activate the new switch and open the door. As you walk down the hall, you will see a terminal.

Use C-3PO to activate it and some blocks will appear. From them you can build another droid and get a 2/3 counter. Continue down the hall and when you reach the ground switch, turn to your left and smash everything here. From the debris you can build another droid, giving you a 3/3 counter and a Mini Kit. Now that you have the Mini Kit, switch to Leia. Command the troops here, then stand on the switch in the middle of the room. Once all 4 are on it, switch to BB-8 and activate the console. Spin each piece twice and the door will open. As soon as you enter the room, head to the far back and activate the switch with BB-8. This will cause a Mini Kit to spawn in the center of the room. After grabbing that, smash stuff around the room for Studs, then activate the console in the center of the room with BB-8. This will transition you to the next section. In the new area, go ahead and start smashing stuff and heading left. Along the back wall you will eventually see a climbable wall. Use Finn to Lightsaber jump up the wall to the top floor.

Once up here, cut through the panel to reveal a glowing blue battery. Build the left section out of it to power the elevator. Once everyone is on it, smash the battery and put it in the right. Now that everyone is up top, switch to C-3PO to activate the console and shut down the forcefield below you. Freeplay: Switch to Rey up here, or anyone else who can use Staff Sockets. To the right of this platform is a socket, so toss your staff in it then swing from here to the right to obtain a Mini Kit. Head into the room you opened down below and smash everything. One object you build will be a small Y-Wing, and constructing it will give you a 1/3 counter. The other object is a cargo carrier. Hop in it and drive it to the Millennium Falcon to complete the first objective. After delivering that item, head right of the Millennium Falcon. Freeplay: To the far right of the Falcon, there will be a room with a ruined picture on the wall. As a Force User, interact with it to fix the picture and obtain a Mini Kit.

There will be a few rooms here with forcefields around them, and a console next to one of them. Interact with it using C-3PO and the field will drop. Inside, go ahead and smash everything and pick up the very obvious Mini Kit. After grabbing that, build the object from the bricks here and a A-Wing will appear, giving you a 2/3 counter. Now switch to Leia, and talk to the soldiers that are now standing in front of the room. Have them follow her and run all the way to the left of the main chamber and start pushing the huge ship part that's in your way. Once it's gone, have Finn and Leia grapple the object on the ceiling and pull it down. From the debris you can build the next hover cart. Drive it to the Millennium Falcon to finish objective 2. For the last part, switch to C-3PO and talk to the alien who is standing a few feet to the right of the Falcon. An elevator will come down, so stand in it and wait for everyone to get on. Once up top, proceed as usual by smashing everything you see.

Freeplay: On this upper floor is a breakable wall. Switch to a strong character to smash through it and reveal a hatch. Use a small character to crawl through and it will lead to a Red Brick. Near the large monitor that is fuzzy will be some bricks you can build from. Make the right object first, then use BB-8 to activate it. This will spawn some bricks that can be built into a Mini Kit. Smash the terminal you made and build the left object now. Use BB-8 and roll around in it. This next minigame is fairly straight forward. Simply move BB-8 in such a way as to make the conveyer belt move. Eventually the crate will spawn on the first floor. Jump down to the first floor, and switch to Leia. Go recruit those same soldiers you used before, and right beside them will be a golden crate. Have them all shoot it and the crate will explode. From the crates remains, build the object which will make the alien happy, thus lowering the forcefield. Go into this room and smash everything. There will be two things to build.
