Be they devoted to pop culture favorites like Star Wars, Fallout , and The Avengers, or fascinating real world subjects like sea life and World War II, every DK book is stuffed with colorful photos, maps, cross-section diagrams, illustrations and more. I was absolutely thrilled to have recently had the opportunity to chat with the imprint’s Marketing and Publicity Vice President Rachel Barry about how they go about putting together these amazing books. UNBOUND WORLDS: When you’re looking toward a subject you’d like to explore, is there any kind of editorial process that readers would be interested in? What do you do when you decide to do a book about something? RB: We have the brands that we work with a lot, like the Star Wars brand and Lego, but we also do books across a lot of different subjects.

We’re looking at where there’s consumer interest, but also where the DK style works the best. We had a great book out this fall on wildlife of the world because we have amazing animal photography, but then we also had a book out on the Undertaker. We have strengths all over these subject areas and get to work on the most amazing line of books! UW: The DK book style—what kind of reference material do you guys get when you decide to put a book together? Do you have to go out and search for it? Do you put a “bible” together on the topic? RB: It really depends. On the licensing stuff, we do get style guides from the various publishers and those definitely guide our direction a little bit, but in the case of books about space or animals or something like that, we have access to different photo libraries and we have an internal content management system. It’s really a vast network of sources that we use, so sometimes we’ll go out and shoot some snakes in the wild, or antique cars, or Lego models if Lego doesn’t have pictures of them in their archive, so it really varies form project to project.

UW: When I look at the style of the books that you do—the photos, the cross-sections—they seem like they would go really well with the internet. Do you guys have an app or web presence? , and we obviously have a lot of content there, and we definitely also have some apps. Our books are available as ebooks, so we have that. Yes, you’re right, they absolutely pre-date the look of the internet: We’ve got great photographs on a white background with leader lines like hyperlinks, but what’s really cool is that we’re still selling a ton of the actual books. So I think that while there is a desire to have content on line, and we provide it, I think our readers still really love the experience of sitting down with a book and going through it and experiencing it the same way that our editors put it together.“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set to hit the big screen this week and it’s sure to attract many of you to theaters around the county. As we know from other examples, movies can pique the reading interests of all ages.

Our library has a large collection of Star Wars books. In fact, there are more than 500 titles, from the Lego Star Wars series for young children, nonfiction technical material, graphic novels and many other spin-off novels. Books about the Star Wars universe have been in publication since the first movie came out in 1977. However, the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney has created a whole new timeline and new official canon. In addition to old favorites, many new books are coming out about the new Star Wars universe. Some of our library branches have set up displays highlighting available books, which have been very popular in recent days. “Being a huge Star Wars fan, I put together a quick display at Fairfax Regional Library,” said John McGillvray. “I’ve had to refill it several times and maintain a small cart full of stuff at my desk for restocking.” You can search the library’s catalog for Star Wars material. Depending on your search type (subject, title, words) different items will show up.
