A few planets, like Jakku, can be explored after you have done a mission on them. At first, exploring these planets is largely pointless as most of the Collectibles will be locked due to not having the proper characters. For this reason, we don't suggest you begin exploring planets until near the end of the game and you have lots of characters unlocked. The main reason to explore the planets is to collect more Gold Bricks, find Carbonite Characters, and do side missions, which also reward Gold Bricks. As mentioned above, many of these things are locked behind having very specific characters, so we suggest you don't begin doing these until late in the game, or until after you beat it. While on these planets, you can do very small side missions. They often last less than 30 seconds and will require you to do a very simple task. Usually it's collect certain items, do a race, fight in space, or fight people on the ground. These missions are very clearly marked, and your mini-map will have green highlights telling you where the objective is.

If that's not the case, the transparent stud line will appear to guide you to your objective. Once you complete a mission, it will automatically warp you back to the person who gave it to you and you'll get a Gold Brick. Besides Gold Bricks, the other main thing to collect on these planets is Carbonite. These usually require you to do something simple, like cut open a wall, or move something with your Force powers. Once you have a piece of Carbonite, you will then need to go to D'Qar. Inside one of the Resistance buildings is a machine that can unthaw the Carbonite blocks and unlock new characters for you. You can see a list of all the characters in the game Here, which includes which characters are in Carbonite and on what planet. To unlock the missions on the Separatist side, you do the same thing -- head into the ship you built in the back of the Main Hanger, spawn a vehicle, and then blow off the lock, accessing the console to add this to the main menu! There are two Achievements that are associated with this part of the game -- and they will likely be among the last ones you unlock.  To earn them you must have one side of the other control ALL of the planets on this menu -- but their is a catch.  In order to unlock the Achievements you must first have one side take over all of the planets they do not have, and then have the other side take all of the planets, unlocking the Achievement for that side, and only THEN can can you take the planets with the opposing faction to unlock their Achievement. Just to let you know - these work way faster and less frustrating if you do them with two players.
