Ryan Gosling's reaction to Oscars blunder is perfect Jimmy Kimmel brilliantly trolled Matt Damon...again It's no wonder the world's so hotly anticipating Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi, which lands in cinemas the world over this December. The Force Awakens left us with SO MANY questions about its characters new and old, it almost needs its own trilogy to fill in the gaps. And what does 'The Last Jedi' mean, anyway? Well, unsurprisingly, there's already been some intense theorising, so here are a selection of possible answers to help you get through the long nights until Luke re-enters our life and proves it all wrongWHO IS REY?*1. Rey is Kylo Ren's sister A widely repeated theory is that Rey is Ben Solo's sister (or perhaps half-sister), leaning partly on his reaction when he hears that his father Han is travelling with "a girl".We're not so sure on this one, though, as neither Han nor Leia give much indication that they know who she is, let alone are hiding the fact that she is their daughter.

Although it could explain why Leia infamously ignored Chewbacca and hugged Rey (other than JJ Abrams making a mistake, that is).2. Rey is Luke's daughter It's a kind of obvious suggestion that Rey might be the daughter of Luke Skywalker - perhaps even too obvious? It would explain her amazing strength in the Force. And he may well have wanted to hide her with all the stuff that went down at his Jedi academy. But again, does the final scene of The Force Awakens really play out like a father-daughter reunion? Although, whatever the truth about Rey's family, we bet that Luke knows what it is.3. Rey is another kind of SkywalkerA series of icky alternatives have been thrown around in the Skywalker vein. Is she the daughter of Darth Vader? Or born from a clone of Padme Amidala?Or there's our favourite totally insane theory - that she is the reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker, which makes her Luke's father.4. Rey is Poe Dameron's sister Marvel has been earning a ton of praise for its Star Wars comics, and they've also turned out some delightfully detailed (if not altogether convincing) theories.

Take this one - fighter pilot Poe's parents Shara Bey and Kes Dameron were Rebellion/Resistance fighters too. After a mission with Luke, Shara ended up in possession of a Force-sensitive tree, which the pair planted outside our house. From this, we get an intuitive leap that says proximity to the tree while growing up made Poe a great pilot, and his secret sister Rey Force-sensitive.5. Rey is a Kenobi If we were in a betting mood, we would probably put money on Rey being related to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Rewatching The Force Awakens, her costumes and many of her actions in the movie (living alone in the desert, creeping around the Death Star Starkiller Base) seem to directly reference Luke's old master. And with Disney beginning to explore what Obi-Wan was up to during his exile, could that have involved abandoning those stuffy Jedi rules about celibacy?6. Rey is a new Jedi messiahOther theories are leaving all those old characters behind and suggesting that Rey is related to new concepts about things that are, within the Star Wars universe, very old indeed.

There was a rumour going around about a funky tree (trees again!) built on the Last Jedi set and two young people who were the original Force users.Or perhaps this standalone comic has already revealed the truth - that Rey was hatched out of a glowing, blue egg.*Not many of these theories offer a satisfactory explanation for why Rey was left with a d-bag like Unkar Plutt.WHO IS SUPREME LEADER SNOKE?7. Snoke is Darth PlagueisThe original Snoke fan theory feels like it's been going around for ages now, and while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has shot it down, it still feels compelling.Could Snoke be Darth Plagueis, the Emperor's old, betrayed master, having somehow survived in secret for years?8. /TNiXL3HQNu— James Smythe (@jpsmythe) January 6, 2016We really hope this isn't true, as it would make Star Wars feel hopelessly circular and unoriginal, but the scars on Snoke's head do look very similar to Vader's.Of course, Vader's body was set on fire at the end of Return of the Jedi, so surely the placement of his scars has been rendered irrelevant.9.

Snoke is Mace WinduBut if Samuel L Jackson is right about Master Windu surviving, he might have a bone to pick with the Skywalker family.10. Snoke is Gallius RaxA more recent theory connects Snoke to an old Imperial protégé of Palpatine who was introduced in the Aftermath trilogy of novels set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. As a man plotting against both the old Empire leaders and the Republic, Gallius Rax is certainly on the way to setting himself up as the leader of the First Order. But would Disney reveal such a major plot point outside of its movies?11. Snoke is the clumsy StormtrooperWhy didn't we see it before?WHO IS THE LAST JEDI?12. Snoke is the Last Jedi There are some hints that Snoke is pretty ancient, and this theory dials that up to 11. The now defunct 'Legends' canon was obsessed with previous iterations of the Jedi order from across the millennia. Could Snoke be the last survivor of an older form of the Jedi? This could draw a line between Luke's search for the ancient Jedi Temple, the secret that Palpatine had the young Gallius Rax (not Snoke in this theory) guarding on Jakku in Aftermath: Life Debt, and the ancient design of his apprentice Kylo Ren's lightsaber.13.

Kylo Ren is the Last Jedi From Luke's point of view, Ben Solo could be considered 'the last Jedi he would ever teach' (until now, that is). That would link the theme of Episode 8 to Luke's regret over what happened to his academy and his monumental decision to take Rey on as another student.14. Luke is the Last Jedi He is, after all, literally described in canon as "the last Jedi". The scroll does not lie.15. Rey is the Last Jedi Could 'last' mean 'most recent'? Well, we've got a new student for you, Luke.OTHER THEORIES16. Kylo Ren is a double agent Another early theory to break out after The Force Awakens's release was that Ben Solo is actually a double agent working to destroy the servants of the dark side from within. His conflict comes from the terrible things that he has to do in order to prove to Snoke that he's on his side, even going so far as to kill Han to prove himself. When he tells Vader's helmet that he will "finish what you started", he means the destruction of Sith, not the Jedi, which began when his grandfather turned against Emperor Palpatine.Or maybe he's just crazy and evil.17.

Lots of the promotional images for The Force Awakens has John Boyega's Finn holding Luke's old lightsaber, rather than Rey. This could be a red herring, or it could indicate that Rey isn't the only new potential Jedi running around.Finn does get a chance to wield the lightsaber a bit (he's not great, but neither is Ren), and this breakdown highlights various points at which he seems to show a Jedi-like sensitivity to what is going on around him.18. Rey will turn to the dark side Could Disney be planning to double down on Luke's failure by turning his latest pupil to the dark side too? Snoke showed some interest in meeting her during The Force Awakens, and there's no way that's a good sign. Also, having Force powers come too quickly and easily is definitely a dark side trait. It has been hinted that she was fighting her own inner battle with anger and aggression in her showdown with Kylo Ren, and director JJ Abrams admitted that he had the earth break apart between them rather than giving Rey the chance to decide whether she would kill him or not.
