Why should the brand stop at hit cross-promotional ventures like LEGO “Star Wars” and LEGO Harry Potter when it can produce its very own “LEGO Movie” populated by those characters and scads more? Similarly, if the Marvels, DCs, and Lucasfilms of the industry can play the mega-franchise game, then darned if LEGO isn’t gonna get in on the interlocking action, too.And so, just three years after the awesomer-than-anticipated success of “The LEGO Movie,” we now get the first follow-up, daringly dubbed, yep, “The LEGO Batman Movie.” Lord Business would no doubt be pleased — except maybe by the fact that aside from the on-point title, this aesthetic spinoff is an anything-goes affair. Bat-mythology has rarely been riffed on as comprehensively, or with such goofy randomness. The new crew handling all the bricklaying includes subversive animation director Chris McKay (Cartoon Network’s “Robot Chicken”) and geek-cred writer Seth Grahame-Smith (“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”).

But the star of the show in every sense is Will Arnett, reprising his entertainingly growly Dark Knight from the previous movie, and making us wish he could scare up some other roles worth noting alongside “Arrested Development.”Arnett’s voice work is pure Christian Bale parody, of course, but the filmmakers also hit on everything from the cut-rate iconography of the Adam West era to Prince’s “Batdance.” And the silliness stretches still further, incorporating live-action snippets from “Jerry Maguire,” among other flourishes. As in the comics, there’s a big emphasis on Batman’s warped symbiosis with the colorfully rendered Joker (Zach Galifianakis). Our hero’s chilly aversion to connection is also examined through his impatient involvement with chirpy Robin (Michael Cera), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson), and Alfred, lampooned here as an indulgently eye-rolling father figure.
