That means when we hit December 1st, all the children are going to want an advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas Day. There is always a boatload of these calendars available, at least here in Sweden, and picking one was always the hardest part of celebrating Christmas when I was a child. It wasn’t because there weren’t enough good ones available, but because there were simply too many that always poked at my attention. I usually went with a chocolate advent calendar that was connected to a TV show.

However, today things are a bit different, and kids are no longer amused by the simple images in a calendar. We need to bring them something a little bit more creative. Lego has the solution to all our problems this year as they have put together and made available the awesome Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar. And let me tell you, it’s off the hook. Each day until Christmas Day, you or your kids will get a mini build or character from the Star Wars series. It’s a sure way to keep you kids activated and creative while at the same time building something awesome that they can play with on Christmas Day. They will have the complete set by that special day, and as they say, it’s the journey to the goal that is the most fun. I bet that is exactly the case with this calendar as well. Who wouldn’t want to add a piece each day to the epic battle that pretty much everyone in the civilized world has seen or heard of at least once? (If you are looking to purchase this awesome advent calendar, you are able to get it right now for $39.99 over at Entertainment Earth)

But, selling at the MSRP of $49.99, this might hinder the popularity of the item. At time of this post writing, Amazon is selling the Star Wars Advent Calendar for $39.99, which is $10 off MSRP, while the remaining stores we track for this item, Walmart and Toys R Us, are selling the unit for MSRP. The LEGO City Advent Calendar (4428) is slightly cheaper selling with a MSRP of $39.99.

This item can be purchased for $31.99 right now at Amazon, while still selling for MSRP at Toys R Us and Walmart. The last of the sets is the LEGO Friends Advent Calendar 2012 (3316). This set is rumored to have been cancelled during the production phase which means availability will be limited. This is clearly evident based on the fact that the calendar appears to not even be available here in the USA unless you go through a third-party seller. There is plenty of inventory available in the UK for £19.99 or less. Both Amazon UK and LEGO Shop UK have the LEGO Friends Advent Calendar available for the price of £19.99 or less. You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.Advent calendars emerged in the mid-1800s to help young Christians count down the days until the Feast of the Nativity. The four-week Advent holiday is meant to inspire solemn reflection and meditation ahead of the birth of Christ. Early examples of Advent calendars featured little paper windows that opened up to reveal religious pictures or Bible verses, according to BBC’s Sunday Podcast. But what does a tiny plastic Jedi Starfighter have to do with Advent? Nowadays, it seems the calendar has strayed far away from its original religious intent. They’re stuffed with collectible toys, pricey makeup, and even shots of whisky. To poke fun of the rise of Christmas kitsch, the Christian humor website Ship Of Fools asked its fans to nominate and vote for the worst “Badvent” calendars. As their results suggest, it gets pretty bad out there. Simon Jenkins, the website's editor, gave HuffPost his perspective on the trend:

I think retailers have seen an opportunity to monetize this rather sweet detail of traditional Christmas . . . The religious story behind ACs doesn’t work for the retailers, of course, so other stories – Star Wars, Barbie, and so on – drive out the deeper meaning behind ACs. That’s bad for religion, of course, but it’s also bad for the inspiring themes embedded in Christmas: the message of peace on earth; the search for a promised child; and the generous gift given at Christmas. The focus shifts from generosity to shopping. Here’s our round-up of some borderline tacky calendars that had us scratching our heads and wondering -- what does this have to do with Advent? We've also included some options we think do a good job of preserving the generous spirit of the season. 1. The Star Wars Calendar. "Every day in December is a countdown to Christmas in a galaxy far, far away with exclusive LEGO Star Wars minifigures and buildable fun," Lego writes in its product description.

"May the force be with you all season long." 2. The One Direction Advent Calendar. 3. The Benefit Cosmetics Calendar. The set comes with 24 miniature beauty items and sold out within a minute last year, according to Elle. Sold by Benefit Cosmetics. 4. The Whisky Calendar. The producers promise the calendar "contains all the festive spirit any whisky lover could ever dream of." Sold by Drinks By The Dram. 5. The Sexy Calendar. Sold by Ann Summers. 1. Divine Advent Calendar. This calendar contains 24 windows that reveal parts of the Christmas story and contains fair trade chocolates. The company says a portion of the proceeds will go towards providing notebooks for school children in Ghana. Sold by Divine Chocolate USA. 2. The Where's Wally Calendar. This advent calendar is sold by the U.K. charity Cards for Causes. The organization sets up temporary Christmas card shops that help fundraise for affiliated charities like Save the Children, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Alzheimer's Society.
