Free workshops for Primary and Secondary School Teachers Find out how to deliver engaging computing, STEM and literacy lessons and tick curriculum boxes using LEGO® Education resources in a free teacher workshop. You will get hands on with LEGO Education resources for either primary or secondary schools, and find out how you can really engage your pupils in computing, literacy and STEM subjects. What to expect from a workshopModern Lego is harming children's development and stifling creativity, Ben Fogle, the first human face to market the product, has said. The TV presenter and adventurer said that if he was to write about how bad the education system is, he would call his dissertation "How Lego ruined the world". In his view, a once "whimsical form of escapism" has transformed into a "rigid box ticking discipline" because children are encouraged to build things by following strict guidelines. His comments emerged as thousands of parents took their children out of school in protests over primary tests that they argue diminish young people's creativity as the Government seeks accountability measures.

Addressing 200 private school heads at the Boarding School Association conference in Manchester, Mr Fogle, who has two children, said: "I don't mean to be disrespectful to the Danish company that makes 19 billion bricks a year. "Lego for many parents is the antithesis of the high tech world. We are desperate to wean our little ones away from the tablets and into the bricks. Its a toy of aspiration. "When I was a child, Lego came in brick form, you’d buy boxes of random bricks. You used your imagination and your mind in your build. "Those multi coloured bricks could transform into anything you wanted, free from the mandates of prescription. There was no right and no wrong. Everyone was a winner." However, he said today Lego had morphed into a kit-based building model rather than the free form it once was.  He said: "It sells most of its bricks in kit form in big and expensive boxes with intricate instructions on how to build a lot remarkable things like space rockets or sunken ships.

"Where once Lego offered a whimsical form of escapism into the world of the subconscious, encouraging creativity and imagination, it's transformed into a rigid 'box ticking' discipline where children are encouraged to build by conformity. "One misaligned or one tiny lost component can spell disaster. I've watched my son fall apart  because it didn’t work.' I can’t do it daddy,’ he wails. ‘It doesn’t look like the picture in the box." He accused Lego of having created "boundaries, limits, restrictions" by making the kits. He explained: "There’s a lot to say for following instructions. "Many of us will endure a lifetime following others. Institutionalisation suits many but not all. Some of us thrive beyond those boundaries. "My point here is that by selling cookie cutter kits they have cheated youngsters and their parents out of any chance to be truly creative." Ben Fogle, who attended boarding school, said Lego was "a mirror to our education system as a whole".

He said: "The Government recently announced plans to introduce national tests for seven year olds. This in my mind goes to show how exam obsessed  society has have become. "Our children now face a constant stream of assessment by an education system obsessed with box ticking. "They are nearly tiny cogs in a government machine. We need to bring positivity, creativity, health and well-being back into the school system as a whole." Lego has been contacted for comment.Skip to main content Skip to accessibility help Show in stock items only LEGO Bricks & MoreBefore you can vote for cool new LEGO sets, or submit your own you'll need to sign in with or register for a LEGO ID: You're currently signed in to LEGO ID as .
