A Calgary dad says he wants an apology after Lego Store staff called security on his 11-year-old son.Doug Dunlop told CBC News his son Tadhg, an avid Lego collector, visited the Chinook Centre store on April 26 with $200 of his own money. When store staff found out Tadhg was 11, they called security and Tadhg was asked to wait until his dad arrived. “I was, of course, shocked,” Dunlop said.The manager told him the store’s policy requires children under 12 to be accompanied while shopping.But Dunlop told CTV News that Tadhg had shopped in the store alone many times before. "That policy is not posted anywhere, and I think it's a ridiculous rule. Their core customers are 9- to 11 year-olds," he said.A Lego spokesperson told the network the company’s biggest concern is for children’s safety, and that the store was just following protocol.Dunlop wrote in a blog post that the security guard he spoke with claimed child abductions were frequent at the mall, and that both the guard and manager implied Dunlop was a bad parent if he didn’t understand why leaving his son alone in a store was dangerous.

In an update posted Wednesday, he wrote that he had spoken with a Lego Store district manager, who agreed to put up a sign in the store stating its policy.However, he still wants both the store manager and the security guard to apologize.“Please understand that I am not asking that the Lego Store run a babysitting service for anyone who comes to the mall,” he wrote. “I am merely asking that paying customers of any age be treated with the respect that they deserve.”Lego Group Reviews Filter Filter 259 Employee Reviews Popular Rating Date Nice work/life balance: as a FT salaried SM, I average 40-43 hrs (in 12 reviews) Awesome work environment with really passionate employees (in 23 reviews) Unfortunately they don't offer a great range of part-time positions (in 10 reviews) You can only be full-time if you're a supervisor or manager (in 9 reviews) 21 Jun, 2015 Pros Wonderful idea , to save families $Also to enhance learning skills and to allow the family to step away from technology , and to teach young ins that going to the mail is fun.

Cons Some say this company is expensive, but I can 100% say that the only ones that are suggesting this are inexperienced lego builders . Advice to Management Keep pushing ahead 1 Nov, 2016 I have been working at Lego Group part-time Pros The environment is great. The teams are good and you get to talk/play with lego aside from doing operational duties. For a retail position it is an awesome job. Cons The hours are not the best since there are fairly large teams hours are spread out pretty thin. Advice to Management Keep doing what you're doing it's a great company to work for. 6 Sep, 2016 Helpful (1) I worked at Lego Group part-time (More than a year) Pros You get to work with children, sell a well known product for a reputable, high profile brand! Great team mates, respectable Store Manager. As others mentioned - great discounts and employee "fringe" benefits (parties, etc). Inflexible hours that fluctuate from maybe 5 hrs /wk to 25 or more, no work life balance for a part time minimum retail job with ridiculous expectations.

Always on call, hard to get time off, schedules may come out late. Adding to that, ASM was very unprofessional who mixed personal life with work and berated employees in front of guests for minuscule issues. Picks favourites, rude to other employees. Supervisors may be the same - young staff with little people training and spent more time chatting with one other than working. Topping it off, 5 to 10 minute breaks were frowned upon - even for a quick drink of water or to use the washroom - for a 4 to 5 shift! Advice to Management Treat your employees better. Put in place ways for front life staff to report grievances, such as unprofessionalism by ASM /supervisors. The community relies on everyone sharing – Add Anonymous Review 16 Jul, 2016 Pros The LEGO Group as a whole is fantastic. They are smart and caring, and genuinely want the best experience for both their employees and consumers. The pay is competitive for management (although non-management is paid minimum wage, no exceptions), the bonuses are a huge incentive, the discount on products is unbelievable, and we get lots of little perks and gifts from the company.

Cons Unfortunately, your experience will vary wildly based on who constitutes your middle management. If you have a great district manager who genuinely cares about your store and your individual growth, you will excel. If you are in a district/area that has a management team that is more self-serving and only care about the bottom line, you will stagnate and lose faith in the vision set by the larger company. I have been in both situations, and one was the best working experience of my life, the other the worst. Advice to Management Allow your store management the ability to rate the people above them and have a neutral party, like an ombudsman, to mediate conflict and hear feedback. If "People Promise" truly matters to the company, make sure your little people get the same promises as the big ones. 27 Jun, 2016 I have been working at Lego Group part-time Pros You get to play with and build Lego; discounts and annual bonuses; managers really focused on individual development Cons Sometimes feels like a daycare centre;

dealing with pushy kids who want free stuff; no coffee breaks allotted; can be difficult adjusting to the company's high standards; the pay is not commensurate with the company's earnings and status Advice to Management Great company to work for, but still plenty of room for improvement 4 May, 2016 Helpful (2) Pros The people are great to work with and their Christmas gifts are phenomenal. Also, employees get a discount. 30% for part time employees, 50% for full time. Cons Pay was very little, very difficult to advance, and you work off a script. You're essentially forced to bother the customers. 17 Jan, 2016 Helpful (1) Pros You work with a group of really awesome LEGO fans. Cons The pay is really low and the hours of work can vary widely. 27 Nov, 2015 Helpful (1) I worked at Lego Group part-time (More than a year) Pros Amazing boss at retail location. Overall the company really seems to value hiring and retaining hard working and intelligent people. Cons All of the same downsides that come with working any retail job.

The only major thing was customers treating the store like a daycare. Advice to Management Keep on keeping on and inspiring your employees to create amazing experiences for kids of all ages! 30 Jun, 2015 I have been working at Lego Group full-time (More than 3 years) Pros Great company with great people. Fun environment with lots of flexibility. Open to growth and innovation. Cons Not all areas are fully developed and make it difficult to achieve the best results. Advice to Management Promote and recognize those who have potential. 30 Mar, 2015 I have been working at Lego Group part-time (More than 3 years) Pros LEGO does a fantastic job of putting a great team together for the stores, including management, making working there incredibly fun. You could almost say you become a family when you work there. They're pretty good (within reason) about flexibility for hours and time off. There are some pretty great 'benefits' that you'll get as well after working there for long enough. If you have to work retail/part-time, this is the best place to do so.
