Hungary has managed to set a new world record by building the highest Lego tower in front of Saint Stephen's Basilica in Budapest. Construction of the 36-metre Lego tower began on Wednesday with several school children taking part, helped by official Danish Lego constructors. The aim was to break the previous US record of 34.43 metres. Officials from the Guinness World Record company arrived in Budapest on Saturday to verify the record. The mayor of the city's fifth district said that he hoped the record would promote Budapest to the world before he braved the height of 36 meters to place the last piece. “This is a modern obelisk behind us and it shows that with lots of minute engineering knowledge and diligence how we can call attention to the fact that this is one of the most beautiful squares of Budapest”, Mayor Antal Rogan said. After Mr Rogan placed the last piece on top of the tower the official measurement showed that a new record was indeed set.

Download the mobile appLego 'Grand Budapest Hotel' unveiledThe Grand Budapest Hotel has received the ultimate luxury compliment -- a Lego version of the prestigious hotel depicted in the Wes Anderson film. The seven-foot tall all-Lego creation required 50,000 certified Lego bricks from 14 different U.S. states and countries as far away as Lithuania, Germany and Poland.Ryan Ziegelbauer, 34, from San Diego, led a team of 10 designers who finished the creation days before it was unveiled at The Grove in Los Angeles. It will go on display at the Architect and Design Museum in Los Angeles through August."I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan and we decided this was the perfect building to build," says Ziegelbauer. "It's a Victorian style building with lots of details and an amazing pink color. As a Lego designer it's cool because it's a color we haven't used before."In fact, ordering the special pink Legos for the facade from a specialty collector in Germany was the first task for the team as they used Lego Digital Designer computer software to design the creation.

Ziegelbauer says that after 575 total people hours of work, he was pleased looking over the creation at 2 a.m. on Thursday night."I was sitting outside my studio and took some pictures with my camera. I looked at the screen, and I couldn't tell the difference from the actual movie model and the Lego model," says Ziegelbauer. "It was like, we nailed it. It looks like it could be on the cover of the movie."The Grand Budapest Hotel comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD on June 17. Tony Revolori, who played Zero, the lobby boy in the film, made the final finishing touches on the creation -- placing the Lego trees in the courtyard.Revolori said he was impressed that the entire creation was made of the famous Danish bricks -- all the way from the significant base to the gold door handles."When I first saw it, I was amazed," says Revolori. "This is very close to the original model we used in the film."Check out an update about this great Lego mystery, after the break!Red alert, red alert, people, this is not a drill!

This is either some seriously misunderstood marketing or a big hint at one of the most welcome, charming and unexpected Lego sets of all time. Are you even sitting down, perhaps on a velvet-covered divan while wearing your finest vintage military uniform and mourning a lost love? Good.Yesterday afternoon, an email from Think Jam, a digital marketing agency whose clients include some big Hollywood studios — like Fox Searchlight Pictures, information that will come in handy soon — started circulating among entertainment journalists. It was a mass send-out, it came with a simple subject line (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) and it contained just one thing, a single graphic that ostensibly advertises Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (perhaps pushing the film’s imminent home release?) but that also includes a pink Lego brick as its focal point. Here, take a look! That’s it, that’s the entirety of the email. Both The Grand Budapest Hotel and The LEGO Movie are hitting home release next Tuesday — but as Grand Budapest is a Fox release and The LEGO Movie is a Warner Bros. release, there’s little reason for the agency tasked with marketing a Fox film would send out a mass email that hinges on the release of another studio’s film.

Or, yes, this could all just be wishful thinking.Brickipedia (which, yes, is basically Wikipedia for Lego nerds, and of which I am a frequent visitor) has zero mention of the even the possibility of a Grand Budapest Hotel set. The site shares plenty of rumors, from what upcoming sets will consist of to the dates we can expect to see them, which is why I basically lurked on the site for months, constantly checking the “rumored” release date of the “Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!!!” set from The LEGO Movie. Nothing mentioning Grand Budapest pops up there, and that’s pretty much the first place a rumor like this would land (if it had any credence). The only mentions of a “Grand Budapest Hotel Lego” that show up from an Google search relate directly to this email. When it comes to movie-centric Legos, the company typically sticks to more sci-fi and superhero-based sets, like their big Star Wars sets, the obvious LEGO Movie sets, and plenty of Marvel heroes. Lego has never made a Wes Anderson-based set (although you can check out some unofficial Lego sets around the web, especially this amazing and quite well-known Royal Tenenbaums creation), and the good thing about Lego in general is that you can absolutely make your own versions of your favorite movies, television shows and other bits of pop culture.
