‘The Lego Batman Movie’: Lego releases Ultimate Batmobile set An image from ‘The Lego Batman Movie.’ When “The Lego Movie” was released in 2014, it earned $469.2 million world-wide and showed there was a healthy appetite for movies told with Lego bricks and minifigures. Profits weren't only reaped at the box office, but on store shelves. Lego released “The Lego Movie” sets around the movie’s 2014 launch, which were among the company’s top five most profitable series that year (others included Lego Star Wars and Lego Super Heroes). The movie also ignited new interest in Lego building, boosting overall sales of Lego products. Anticipation is high for “The Lego Batman Movie,” opening Feb. 10. Lego is releasing 18 toy sets tied to the movie, including “The Ultimate Batmobile,” which MarketWatch is exclusively revealing. The “Ultimate Batmobile” set will be released on June 1 with a retail price of $129.99, Lego says. The set includes eight minifigures of “Lego Batman” characters — Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Polka-Dot Man on a flying disc, Alfred Pennyworth (in Batsuit), Wicked Witch of the West and two Flying Monkeys.

The Batmobile divides into four different vehicles — the Batmobile, Batwing, Bat-Tank and Batcycle — and there is a rotating Bat-Signal with a Lego light brick. The Batmobile measures 4 inches high, 14 inches long and 6 inches wide. Inspired by the film, the first set depicts LEGO Batman’s race through Gotham City in pursuit of Man-Bat and the Kabuki Twins in the Batmobile. The set includes the Batmobile with dual cockpit for Batman and Robin, two stud shooters and multidirectional wheels for three different modes — race mode, monster truck mode, and parallel-parking mode. The set, which features 581 pieces, will retail for $59.99. The Joker’s Notorious Lowrider set depicts Batgirl’s pursuit of The Joker and Harley Quinn through the streets of Gotham City.

The lowrider features bouncing suspension, handles for Harley to hang onto, and hidden double spring-loaded shooters (activated by pushing the buttons behind the stereo.) The set, which features 433 pieces, will retail for $49.99. Both sets will be on display at the LEGO booth at Comic-Con. They’ll go on sale later this year. Before Ben Affleck makes his standalone film debut with The Batman, The Dark Knight of Gotham City is set to return to the big screen yet again with Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Batman Movie. A spinoff to the popular LEGO Movie, the film is set to focus entirely on Will Arnett’s self-parodying Bruce Wayne/Batman as he deals with the many criminals and allies he has scattered throughout his beloved city. To say that the studio is going all in on the meta, self-referential tone of the first LEGO Movie would be an understatement based on the film’s extremely humorous and dry marketing campaign so far.

The film is just a few weeks away from being released, and as of late, the studio has been putting more and more attention on the other iconic characters fans can expect to see show up in the film. The latest pieces of merchandising for the film continue that recent trend as well, teasing the appearance of some of Batman’s most iconic and beloved foes. Today, The LEGO Group has revealed four new LEGO toy sets that will be released in conjunction with the film. Titled “Scarecrow Fearful Face-off,” “Bane Toxic Truck Attack,” “Two-Face Double Demolition,” and “The Batwing,” the new sets feature appearances from Scarecrow, Bane, and Two-Face. Take a look for yourself below: These four villains are just some of the many, many characters from the Batman comics that are set to make an appearance/play a role in the film. Other notable characters include Harley Quinn (Jenny Slate), The Joker (Zach Galifianakis), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson), and more. Directed by Chris McKay (who worked on the first LEGO Movie), the film quite simply promises to be one of the most ambitious and enthusiastic deep dives into Batman’s world that has ever been attempted onscreen.

However, one of the biggest hurdles that the film is facing is whether or not it’ll be able to live up to the acclaim of the first LEGO Movie. Released in 2014, it was one of the most critically-acclaimed films of the year (with a sequel already in development), and sparked a newfound interest and love for the LEGO brand around the world. But Arnett’s Batman was just one of the supporting characters of the film, and while he was a scene-stealer in his own way, many fans have wondered if he’ll be able to carry a movie of his own. Fortunately, it looks like the film will actually be a full-fledged Batman film in its own right, and not just a feature-length joke about the seriousness of the character. So if it can manage to capture that same love and sense of adventure that every standalone Batman film should, then it’ll hopefully be able to live on its own merits, rather than just trying to keep the momentum of its LEGO Movie predecessor going.
