You may be familiar with the LEGO series of video games, but if you’re not, just know that the series lets you play as your favorite pop culture characters on a home or portable console. The upcoming installment LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will be released on January 26 and BuzzFeed has exclusive footage of a cutscene from the game. For actual gameplay footage, check out the Open World Trailer. The newest entry in the LEGO Marvel series features scenes and heroes adapted from the Marvel cinematic universe as well as heroes from the comics. In the new footage, we see the first appearances of Black Widow from the original The Avengers movie recreated with LEGOs. The cutscene also uses the original dialogue from the scene. In addition to Black Widow, we get a look at Mark Ruffalo as a shifty, nervous LEGO Bruce Banner. There’s also a decidedly fuller-haired Phil Coulson. Of course, the signature goofy LEGO humor is present throughout. When did Hawkeye and Black Widow go on vacation together?!

As we’ve reported before, there is a major lack of Black Widow (and Scarlet Witch, for that matter) featured in Disney’s officially licensed Avengers: Age of Ultron merchandise. Even with Mark Ruffalo asking Marvel for more female superhero toys for his daughter to play with, the companies refuse to take a hint. Further stirring the pot, Disney and Marvel have left Black Widow out of new toy sets featuring one of her most badass moments in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s like they’re doing this on purpose or something — oh wait, they are. As you’ll recall in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there’s a scene in which Captain America is busy fighting Ultron, distracting the sentient robot from the team’s real mission.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye pilots the Quinjet, dropping Black Widow out of the hold on a motorcycle. It’s Black Widow who ultimately accomplishes the goal (with some teamwork, obviously), and it’s Black Widow who gets to ride around on the motorcycle and be a badass. But not according to these new Avengers play sets (via iO9). According to Disney and Marvel’s revisionist take for their merchandise, it wasn’t Black Widow who dropped out of the Quinjet on a motorcycle — it was Captain America. Apparently, in the highly fictional fantasy world of superheroes, it’s still just a little too unbelievable that a woman could save the day. Based off of these toys, it seems as though Disney and Marvel have very different ideas about who should have been on that motorcycle. In the first toy image, you’ll note that Black Widow has not only been replaced by Cap on the bike, but that she’s nowhere to be found on the box art at all. And below that, in the LEGO set, Black Widow is featured as the pilot, while Cap gets to ride the bike.

To be fair (I guess, but not really), Hawkeye isn’t featured in either set, but the exclusion of Hawkeye is based on his lack of powers and the general lack of enthusiasm for the character (although, if you’ve seen Age of Ultron, you’re probably a fan of his now). The exclusion and sidelining of Black Widow is based entirely on her gender and outdated stereotypes about gender-exclusive toys and assumptions about a girl’s place among the boys. Black Widow drives the guys around so they can save the day, while her male peers (and equals, in the actual MCU) get to do all the big heroic stuff. In that first set, Black Widow isn’t allowed to join the party at all. What kind of bulls—t is this?! I wish Disney and Marvel would think about the messages they’re sending both girls and boys with their willful exclusion of Black Widow from their merchandise — not only are they insisting on the roles women can or should have, but they’re telling kids that it’s not cool for women to save the day, and it’s certainly not cool for girls to play with these toys or for boys to appreciate female superheroes.

Get it together, Disney. This is more than just unacceptable at this point — it’s downright offensive. Check out the 50 coolest easter eggs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:Natasha Romanov, the Black Widow, is the world’s deadliest assassin and spy, and essential part of the Avengers movie franchise. But with Avengers: Age of Ultron hitting theaters the Friday, Marvel and Disney continue to treat Natasha as the “invisible woman” when it comes to toys, clothing and other merchandise. Of the 60 products that Marvel and Disney released for Avengers: Age of Ultron, only three featured Black Widow. There were no Black Widow action figures, costumes or clothing for girls. The three Black Widow items available from Marvel are a tote bag, a men’s t-shirt, and a figure that is part of a large LEGO set. Marvel’s licensing partners do not fare much better. Black Widow is consistently left out of toy lines, the fail to even try to market her to girls and she is excluded from team shots on merchandise aimed at boys.

Last summer, we all were asking #WheresGamora? We hoped that the outcry would lead to changes in marketing this time around. There are two ways you can help Marvel and Disney see the error of their way. The first is to find examples of how Black Widow is excluded from merchandise, take a photo and then share it on Twitter with the hashtag #WheresNatasha. @Marvel @Target You have the entire team — including Hawkeye and Ultron, but no Black Widow? — Heroic Girls (@HeroicGirls) April 27, 2015 petition to “Include Black Widow in all Avengers-related toy lines, clothing and merchandise.” We’ve partnered with our friends over at Legion of Leia to get the word out, but we need your help, too. Every hashtag, signature and share puts more pressure on the decision-makers who have decided that girls don’t need heroic toys and that boys can never look up to a woman as a hero. After women bought record numbers of tickets to see Guardians of the Galaxy last summer, and complained mightily that they were shortchanged by the lack of Gamora merchandise, we expected that Marvel had learned its lesson, and that things would be better with Age of Ultron.
