We believe that everyone belongs at the Library, and we are working hard to expand our services to kids with special needs and their families in ways that are meaningful, dynamic, and enriching.  Every child deserves the chance to enjoy all the wonderful items available at the library.  Join us as we continue to improve our programming to welcome and embrace our patrons who need a little more from us.Please feel free to contact us by email, by calling the Children's and Teens' Services Desk at 303-651-8477, or by stopping by.  Our Children's and Teens' librarians have all received training around Autism Spectrum Disorders and other special needs patrons, and we always have Spanish-speaking librarians available for assistance. We'd really love to meet with you! Children's and Teens' Head Librarian Elektra Greer is also available for 30-minute appointments to discuss ways the Library can support your family or group.  Email Elektra or call 303-651-8781 to make an appointment.

Visit our Special Accommodations page to learn about wide variety of services we offer to patrons who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, visually-impaired, disabled or homebound. Almost all of our programming -- including storytimes and kids' clubs -- can be modified to welcome any child who would like to participate.  Give us a heads up and we'll be happy to work with you and your child or group to make it a great experience for all involved! First Friday of the month, 6 to 8 pm. Children can complete a building challenge and have their creations displayed in the library or free build.  This is a family event, and all ages, abilities, and needs are welcome.  Children under 8 and those with special assistance needs must be accompanied by an adult. This is an after-hours event, so we ask that patrons please use the West Lobby entrance only. Our Teen Volunteering opportunities can be accommodated for nearly every kind of special circumstance.  We have a wide variety of volunteering jobs that can be filled by anyone with a desire and willingness to help out.

Our Librarians are great at creating a warm, non-threatening, and welcoming environment for all types of children, including those on the Autism spectrum, those with physical limitations, and those with sensory processing difficulties, We are happy to schedule after-hours Library access for small groups in order to accommodate our patrons that may need a quieter or less crowded setting to enjoy their library. We also offer small group tours at off-peak times during regular library hours.  Just contact us to arrange a personal tour with one of our librarians and get to know your library! Occasionally the Library hosts these special events designed specifically for kids on the spectrum and their families. ASD youth and their families are invited the Library before regular open hours.  Join us for a great time at the Library!  For more information, read this article from Public Libraries Online. The Library's BiBli robots were the result of nearly a year of collaboration between the Longmont Public Library and ROBAUTO, a local robotics engineering firm that contributed the design and build of the robot.

With a generous grant from CAN’d Aid, Oskar Blues’ nonprofit grant-making arm, the Library and ROBAUTO created the first BiBli to assist children on the Autism spectrum practice social skills and engage in the Library. During 2016, Baby BiBlis were "born" -- smaller versions of BiBli, designed to be loaned out for kids to create original programming around the Longmont community.  The three Baby BiBlis were big hits. In the fall of 2016, the BiBlis were phased out from the Library's regular programming.  Interested parents, students, and teachers can request a 30-minute appointment to meet and get to know the BiBlis by contacting Elektra Greer by email or by phone at (303) 651-8781. BiBlis can be purchased for private use through ROBAUTO, Inc. BiBlis will always be special at the Longmont Library, and staff here will always be grateful to the hope and promise they delivered to our local families living with kids on the Autism spectrum. If you have ideas for how we can make your Library a more welcoming place for all patrons, please let us know!
