Annual UA Expo Features Info on Local Summer Camps for Children Mar 28, 2016 | Tags: Children, College of Human Environmental Sciences, Graduate Parent Support, Graduate School, Hotel and Meetings Management, Summer | Posted in Events, Outreach | TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — West Alabama families interested in learning more about the numerous summer activities available to their children are invited to The University of Alabama’s fifth annual Summer Camp & Childcare Expo. The free event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Presidential Park on Campus Drive West next to Publix at University.
Hosted by the UA’s Graduate School, Graduate Parent Support and the College of Human Environmental Sciences’ department of restaurant, hotel and meetings management students, the expo gives parents and children an opportunity to talk and interact with exhibitors regarding various summer camp and childcare programs. These programs include arts, music, athletics and education. There will also be fun, interactive activities for children to enjoy. Exhibitors, such as Tumblebus & Brick4kidz, will bring an amusement park set up using Lego bricks and free play Legos; PARAkids Daycamp will bring coloring sheets describing a particular activity; and the Alabama Museum of Natural History will have hands-on fossils, rocks and minerals at the table. “I hope parents come and are amazed at the amount and variety of wonderful camps available right here in Tuscaloosa,” said Dr. Cori Perdue, director of graduate school programs. “I want parents to be excited about what their kids can do over the summer instead of worrying about how they are going to balance being a parent and a student/employee.
“Their kids can do so many things: learn how to make chocolate, learn horseback riding, learn more about music or sports, develop their creative and artistic abilities and so much more. And these activities do not need to break the bank. Some programs offer scholarships, and some are even free. “I have four kids, and I know that I want them to enjoy the summer and learn new things in a fun and enriching environment even if I will be at work.” For more information, please email summercampexpo@ua.edu. Below is the LEGO Racer 8145 model coming in at 1:10 scale measuring an impressive 18 inches in length. I was also very impressed at the look of this as LEGO has really come on from the early days of LEGO Technics. The finished model has the V12 front mounted engine with working pistons and realistic details all round, such as functional doors, boot, hood and steering system. It took me over 3 hours of build time but nothing was overly complicated (mainly due to the great instructions as usual from LEGO) and you get a few spare parts too.
Price per part for this model is very good too, ending up with a good sized model. I have been a LEGO fan since I was small and I’ve always seen them as a techie jigsaw puzzle with the ability to build something that isn’t fixed. I also think they are great for younger minds as its a good way to bring out creativity and problem solving abilities in kids. (as well as a great way to keep them engrossed for a few hours). With this kit there are plenty of modifications you can make, for instances, with a few more pieces from LEGO you could build the Ferrari Enzo.
