To Apply for a Media/Press badge please use our Press Application The critical and commercial success of The LEGO Batman Movie proved that the original LEGO Movie from 2014 was no fluke, and Warner Bros. was smart to develop an animated film franchise around the popular toy line. Critics and audiences agree that the spinoff is an entertaining and heartfelt sendup of the Dark Knight’s film history and mythos, building off of Will Arnett’s hysterical portrayal of the superhero in the first film. The character has proven to be such a hit, the plan is for him to come back in 2019’s The LEGO Movie Sequel. While LEGO Batman follows LEGO Movie on the release calendar, there are very little connections (if any at all) between the two films in terms of narrative. Though the pair seems to operate in their own corners of the universe, they are actually intertwined, and the events from LEGO Batman will impact his character development in The LEGO Movie 2, where he will once again be fighting alongside Emmet and Wyldstyle.
Since those two inhabit the same world as LEGO Batman, some may have been wondering why they were not in director Chris McKay’s film, and now an answer has been revealed. Speaking with Cinema Blend, McKay explained why the creative team decided against including Emmet and Wyldstyle, despite that dynamic being such a blast in the first LEGO movie: Yeah, we talked about it a lot. You can imagine the natural inclination is to include Wyldstyle and Emmet — they were so popular from the first movie, as well as other characters. We said, ‘You know what? Batman should have his own movie.’ He’ll meet up with Emmet and Wyldstyle in due time, so fans will see that pairing again, but we want to build to that. This time, tell Batman’s own story — a story we haven’t seen before in the movies about what Batman really struggles with when he has everything in the world. He’s got money, he’s got adoring fans, he’s got great vehicles, great gadgets, but when he goes home he really has nothing.
McKay’s comments make a great deal of sense, and an argument can be made that if Emmet and Wyldstyle showed up, Batman’s “solo” movie would morph inadvertently into LEGO Movie 2 since it would feature many of the same figures. As great as those characters are, there’s a proper time and place for them to reappear. From the beginning, The LEGO Batman Movie was designed to be all about the Caped Crusader and his personal journey as he welcomes new allies Robin and Barbara Gordon into his life. Emmet and Wyldstyle are too significant to be reduced to side characters; they are co-leads in the larger franchise, and if they didn’t have much to do, it would be disappointing for many viewers. For LEGO Batman to reach its full potential, a clear separation had to be made. Ultimately, this was a great way to flesh out one of the LEGO world’s standout characters, providing LEGO Batman with a wholly-realized arc that rivaled the growths of Emmet and Wyldstyle before him. For the most part, Arnett’s riff was initially more or less an amusing caricature/parody of Batman’s personality, and he deserved his own feature film that explored his various layers.
Ideally, this will make Batman’s interactions with Emmet, Wyldstyle, and the rest of the LEGO Movie crew all the more rewarding the next time we see the group together again.
