We all remember having a pop-up book as a kid, opening the pages and having a chicken’s mouth open as you turn the page or having a slightly scary dinosaur pop out at you. Some even had little tabs to yank about in order to makes thing slightly wiggle from side-to-side. That was back then, now pop-up books have become way more advanced. The LEGO Pop-Up Book popped up (sorry) on Amazon, a fair few months ago, with nothing but a title and cover to go by, so I decided to pick up a copy. I wasn’t going to review it, as the whole appeal of a pop-up book is seeing it pop-up. But after flipping through it pages, I just had to share my thoughts….. Best-selling pop-up master, Matthew Reinhart takes fans on the ultimate journey through LEGO history…with a little help from narrator Professor Wolfgang von Brickhausen, who heads the department of LEGO Studies at Baseplate University. This one-of-a-kind book is positively bursting with humour and interactivity! There are intricate pops to marvel at, tabs to pull, wheels to spin, mini accordion books to unfold, maps to discover and much more besides!

The LEGO Pop-Up Book takes you on a journey through the LEGO universe via the medium of pop-up papercraft and from the very first moment you open it up, you can’t help but be a little impressed. The book only has 10 pages split across five differently themed sections, but each one of those pages is filled with fun LEGO facts and of course amazingly detailed pop-up sections. The first sections looks at the history of the LEGO brand, it’s bricks and includes a pop-up version of set 31024: Roaring Power, just like the 3 in 1 builds of the set, the pop-up begins as the car, then lifting the top section turns it into a seaplane or pulling the tab at the bottom of the page, raises a roarsome LEGO dinosaur to life. The second section is all about the many amazing minifigures which inhabits the world of LEGO. The pop-up section features a mountain of minifigures, lovingly hand-drawn and includes quite a few characters from the Collectable Minifigures range. Along with the main pop-up section, the page includes a little flipbook of minifigures facts and a trio of wheels which can be turned to make minifigure mash-ups.

The third section covers the classic big three themes – LEGO Castle, LEGO Space and LEGO City, with the first pop-up section being that of set 7094: Kings Castle Siege. There’s a little bit of background information on the castle theme, with LEGO City tucked away other a small pop-up flap. But the real treat lurks beneath the castle. Pulling the tab over the castle reveals the Galaxy Explorer, blasting through outer space. You’ll also to treated to a little story of the much-loved LEGO Space theme. Just having one pop-up creation on a page is impressive but to have them transform into completely new things is jaw-dropping. But it’s not just older sets the book looks at, with the fourth section heading off to the land of LEGO Ninjago. As you open the page, the ninja of Ninjago bursts from it and unleash the power of Spinjitzu. There’s a little information on the theme as well as a fold-out strip featuring trading card-style portraits of each character and two cool little transforming images of a couple of LEGO Ninjago sets.

But the real treat is left until the end, which instills the notion that when building with LEGO, the possibilities really are endless. As you open the page you’ll be greeted by the books most impressive papercraft structure. It’s so tall, I couldn’t take an image good enough to fit it all in. The mass mountain of creation, is filled with fun little nods to LEGO themes past and present, including NEXO KNIGHTS, LEGO City, M-Tron, Trains and so many more. You’ll delight in spotting your favourite themes and minfigures within the array of LEGO papercraft. Along with the main pop-up structures, each page features fun little flip-up sections or pull-out tabs. These all offer in more neat details of various themes or eras of LEGO History. The book is outstanding, how it’s possible to create something so intricate and detailed is amazing. All the artwork in lovingly hand-drawn, adding to the books charm. If the pop-up sections and other movable elements don’t distract you too much, the book is also very interesting to read too, with lots of great little facts about LEGO.

The LEGO Pop-Up Book is aimed at kids and it would make an amazing Christmas gift for any child, but I’ll say AFOLs would definitely be more delighted in losing themselves in what is a truly impressive book. Matthew Reinhart is a papercraft master, I hope the images above and the little video, manages to partly convey his amazing work. But I’d really urge you to track down a copy for yourselves to truly appreciate the books incredible sense of fun. Why Scholastic aren’t pushing this title more is beyond me, but it seems to be the case with all their LEGO titles. It’s a shame they are given the same exposure as DK Books and No Strach’s LEGO offerings, as Scholastic produce some great little official but off-beat titles and this is one of them The LEGO Pop-Up Book is published by Scholastic US and you can order your own copy from Amazon. It’s not readily available so be quick if you want to a copy of this unique little book.Items related to Brick 2 x 8 available on external websites:Buy lego parts~(4) brick 2 x 8 3007 light bluish grayBuy lego parts~(4) brick 2 x 8 3007 blueBuy lego bricks black 2x8 qty 3Buy lego lot 2 white 2x8 brick e basic building part 3007Buy lego white 2x8 (3007) and 2x10 (3006) bricks, lot of 2Buy new lego (x8) blue bricks 2 x 8 part
