Find out what's happening in the world as it unfolds.Story highlightsThe 2013 Bay Area Maker Faire took place last weekend in San Mateo, CaliforniaThe popular annual festival combines science, crafts, robotics and steampunk fashionOrganizers estimate it drew more than 120,000 peopleThere are more than 120 Maker Faires around the world in 2013, up from just 60 last yearThe Maker Faire is a festival spun out of the maker movement that brings together science, crafting, robots, steampunk, drones and Legos. But in true maker spirit, most of the satellite events are homegrown. There will be more than 120 smaller Maker Faires put on in communities around the world in 2013, up from just 60 last year.

While Maker Media doesn't directly organize these smaller events, it does provide locals with connections and a playbook on how to put on their own Maker Faire-branded events. JUST WATCHEDReplayMore Videos ...MUST WATCH Smaller activities like lock-picking and soldering lessons are also big hits. But the fastest-growing categories at Maker Faires are Arduino (a tiny electronic controller), the single-board computer Raspberry Pi, 3-D printing and personal fabrication, according to Huss. The Fiesta Hall was kept dark for light-centric displays like a giant Tetris game, a glowing abstract forest, and the ArcAttack musical performance group, which dazzled the crowd with its Tesla coils. The event had a heavy focus on the local community and featured booths for Bay Area groups devoted to Legos, robotics, model tanks, and even building R2-D2 robots from "Star Wars." In the Expo Hall, the makers gave talks and small companies sold their wares for crafters and makers.1. Being Followed By A Giant Mouse

I’m talking about that giant mouse following you around everywhere you go. Turn on the TV, he's there. Drive down the street, there are those ears staring back at you from a billboard. People can't avoid Mickey's reach. 2. It’s Always Time For A Brew In Anaheim The Anaheim Brewery first opened its doors in 1870. A century and a half is a pretty good track record, and it’s also a lot of time to perfect the perfect glass of beer. There is also the very popular Nobel Ale Works in town as well as Bottle Logic Brewing, and Bootleggers, Valiant Brewing, Four Sons Brewery, and Old Orange Brewing are just a rock skip outside of Anaheim. And what better time to enjoy it than Oktoberfest, which is like Oktoberfest anywhere else only a few billion times better. 3. There’s No Doubt About The Music Pop bands come and go, but as far as Anaheim is concerned, No Doubt will live forever. Locals always hold out hope that their hometown band will announce a show back in their hood.

4. Being The Hipsters Of Halloween You don’t know a truly fun Halloween until you’ve spent it in Anaheim. It’s been running strong for over 90 years, so obviously they take it very seriously. That’s probably why the streets fill up with upwards of 30,000 goblins and ghouls for a party that feels as much like Mardi Gras as it does Halloween. 5. The Only Thing That Makes A Donut Better Everybody loves donuts, right? Of course they do. But donuts in Anaheim are even better than the standard fare because Anaheim has M&M Donuts and you don’t. This place is so popular, there’s never not a line to wait in, but there’s a reason why people do it and that’s because life is too short to not enjoy delicious donuts. 6. Heading Downtown Still Means Disney The folks in Anaheim might avoid Disneyland at all costs, but one notable exception is Downtown Disney. Unlike the Disneyland park, there are no admission fees so it’s free to go. Sure, everything is a little overpriced, but you can almost always find a good time.

There’s the ESPN Zone sports bar, Rainforest Café, a build-your-own-race car store, and the Lego Store is always a popular destination, because seeing a giant Darth Vader crafted out of the popular toy never, ever gets old. 7. Beach Bums That Work Their Bums Off Anaheim is full of the tightly-toned and tanned tushes that make up the USA National Volleyball team. It’s where they train as the official host city. You can even jump out from the sidelines and get in the game yourself in one of the many amateur leagues, too. 8. Having A Pro Sports Team Based On A Disney Movie What, your city’s hockey team wasn’t created out of thin air around a kid’s movie? Sucks to be you! Luckily for Anaheim, they have all of that and more in their team, The Anaheim Ducks, formerly known as The Mighty Ducks. In the twenty years since they’ve been around, the Ducks have made it to the playoffs ten times and taken home three Pacific Division titles along with two Western Conference Championships.

And, oh yeah, they even got themselves one of those giant cups from some guy named Stanley. 9. Being The Real City Of Angels Los Angeles can call itself the City of Angels. But Anaheim is the real home of The Angels. The Angels have played at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim since 1996 and there’s a lot of pride in those stands. 10. Being Everybody’s Best Friend When you live in Anaheim, get used to being everybody’s best friend, especially around the holidays and summer months. Your couch is a lot cheaper than a hotel. It’s actually pretty nice having a constant influx of visitors and you get used to it after a while. But, if you have any beef with it, take it up with that big-eared mouse. It’s really all his fault, anyway. Did we miss anything?
