Wheel fun as Lego robots set pace Wheeled robots test students' skills University of Waikato software design students pit their skills against each other in a competition to program lego robots. A clap of the hands and the Lego Mindstorms wheeled robots raced out of the starting gate on the way around a tiny racetrack - all in the name of education. Second-year software engineering students assembled the Lego units and programmed them to follow a white line down the straight, through a series of turns, a little chicane, a couple of loop-the-loops and back to the start again. The technological delights were powered by two independent motors on each of the main wheels which controlled the steering. Two light sensors placed on either side of the white line guided the robot units around the track to varying degrees of success and a sound sensor listened for the clap to trigger the time trial. Students were put into pairs to form seven teams to take part in the race.
School of Engineering lecturer Dr Marcus Wilson said accuracy and speed were all important. "Their robot has to be accurate so it has got to follow that white line," said Wilson. Failure to do so resulted in severe time penalties with one of the teams called Lightning picking up a 100-second penalty in their first run. The robot race was part of the Carter Holt Harvey Pulp & Paper engineering design show at Waikato University where students got to show what they had learned throughout the year. Other impressive designs included a mechanised tray seeder which could sow hundreds of pine seeds into growing trays in just seconds and a snake robot for use in rescues and disaster zones. Wilson said the race was part of student assessment and top marks would go to the fastest team. "They have to work through the design, what are the most important things to have in their design and make sure their final product meets those requirements." The robots were great fun and the students, who worked on the project for 12 weeks, were keen and dedicated to the course.
"The proof is the fact that one of our lab sessions is 8 o'clock in the morning and people are always there at 8 o'clock. It motivates them to get going for the day." Team Lightning student Sheena Mira-ato said making the hardware and software work together was a difficult task. "It's challenging but highly enjoyable as well." She was a second-year student and had another full year to go before she stepped out into the workforce but said her future prospects included working in a networking company.
