£20.86Buy it now watching | View detailsCondition:NewTime left:19d 3h 3mThe Lego Racers franchise was one of my favorites growing up. But after the second installment in 2001, the franchise fell off the map. This was probably due to the rocky financial situation Lego was in around that time, a slump that was corrected right around the same time due to the launch of the Star Wars and Bionicle properties. Lego launched a few ill-fated racing games within different IPs, but primarily moved into the licensed-properties market after the massive success of the Lego Star Wars games.“Now, wait…” you may be saying, “Wasn’t there a cancelled Lego Racers game around 2004? You’re probably not actually saying that since even I didn’t know about it until I was doing some research for this article. But it wans’t just one game - two different Racers games were in development around the same time. And not only that, there was what appears to be a completely different Racers game in development in 2009.Brief backstory: after the release of Lego Racers 2 in 2001, the spiritual successor to the Racers franchise was launched in the form of Lego Drome Racers in 2002.

Developed by Attention to Detail and published by EA, Drome Racers was not the most well received game in Lego’s history, though supposedly this was due to publisher interference. Regardless, Drome Racers developer ATD went out of business in 2003, a little less than a year after the release of Drome Racers. However, within that time they were reportedly working on another Racers game.A quick scroll down former ATD developer Simon Goodwin’s website reveals that ATD was working on the tech to make a massively open world Racers game under the title Lego Racers 4 (Drome Racers was called Lego Racers 3 while in development). Supposedly the game was canned because Lego wasn’t confident enough in the tech behind the open-world mechanics to deliver on such a hefty promise. In 2004, a mysterious ad found its way into a Lego catalog, seemingly marketing a game called Lego Racers CC. This is the extent of the information we have on that particular game. Some have speculated that after ATD’s collapse, the assets from LR4 were given to another company, and that was the basis for LRCC.

However, former ATD developers have said this is not so.In 2009, on the box art of a number of Lego racing sets, there were mentions of an upcoming Lego Racers: The Video Game. This game never saw the light of day either, but was presumably appropriated into 2010’s ill-fated Lego Universe. But now, with Lego on top of the modern toy market, it is time for Lego Racers to return. And there are so many opportunities for innovative gameplay. With the advent of next-gen consoles, super powered PCs, and incredible engines like Unreal and Frostbite, Lego could really push the franchise into the modern era. I mean, look how good Battlefield 1 looks. Aesthetically, the perfect version of the game would look like Forza Horizon 3 if it were built entirely out of Legos, a la all the environments in The Lego Movie. Or even something built on the Avalanche engine used on the recent Mad Max game. That game is gorgeous. In terms of adapting the gameplay elements of the first two games, it would be logical for the third (or seventh?

Eighth if we count the mobile game) installment to follow a similar character progression: working your way through tiers of racing leagues until you can challenge the best racer in the game. Lego Racers 2 built off Lego Racers strict grand-prix-style, Mario Kart 64-esque campaign progression by incorporating bosses that were raced in head-to-head bouts. In an ideal world, this would be more or less the way the third installment would play out, but we’ll get more on that when I lay out my ideal plot. Through a mixture of circuit tournaments (all of which are classic 4 track, 8 car races based on a points system like in Mario Kart) and optional point-to-point races found in the open world segments, the player will be able to experience the world of Lego Racers 3 as linearly or non-linearly as they want.I’d love to incorporate some of the open world elements of the second game but expand on them the way LR4 hoped to, giving the player the ability to stumble across new parts for your car out in the world.

This would be in the form to abandoned garages and wrecks, where you could either claim the whole vehicle, or take it apart piece by piece and appropriate only the most desired parts for yourself. I think there is ample room for dynamic and intuitive car customization. Every single piece of your vehicle should be intractable. It would hopefully be like a mixture between the car customizers in Need for Speed and a really powerful version of Lego Digital Designer. We can get awesome Lego cars like this one:Obviously, there will be an options to fast travel for those who dislike open world traveling. This will be standard for any story driven event. We don’t want to keep impatient players disinterested if we can help it. But there are incentives to participating in open world driving: bonus cars to win in point-to-point races, hidden garages with special parts and perks, and obviously easter eggs. There would still be a power up system in this installment, and it will play out much like in the first game, where there is a base collectible power up that can be boosted by collecting other bricks.

This game will also include the mechanic from Lego Racers 2 where your car can lose pieces from collisions and attacks until you’re just a minifig running along the track. But there is a new gameplay element I think could be incorporated, drawing a little bit from Mad Max and Mario Kart: Double Dash: your mechanic. You can choose to swap seats with your mechanic at any time, and they’ll have some sort of perk that engages for the limited amount of time they’ll be in the driver’s seat. But I’ll get more into those as I introduce the characters I think should be in this game.Anyway, those would be the basic gameplay elements, with a lot of nuance and minutia therein. And story-wise, the Racers franchise has always been an amalgamation of most of popular Lego properties at the time of each specific game’s release. And with the huge growth of Lego’s available properties since 2001, there is ample opportunity to incorporate some pretty cool IPs into the Lego Racers universe. Now, on to the story:
