While certainly a well-designed game, it packs a competitive punch and is not recommended to leisurely armchair racers.

The computerized competitors don't go easy on anyone, but the game contains many features that make it finish miles ahead of the original. Creating and designing original cars and drivers is only the beginning of the fun. A wide variety of differently shaped and colored blocks are available. Each world and its tracks present different environments and road conditions, ranging from snow to stormy weather. As players maneuver through each world in search of tracks to race they will also be accomplishing mini-missions, such as collecting fuel barrels and weather balloons, to help the various characters of each world. Power-ups, including invisibility shields, homing missiles, and deconstructing rockets, are readily available to stall the competition. Each power-up also has advanced uses that create different effects by picking up and releasing items. For example, depressing the "use" key for longer than normal will double the damage to the competition. petition, though fierce, makes the game a worthy challenge.

While frustration may set in with some audiences, there is a "Catch Up" feature in the main menu that will save the game's difficulty based on how well the racer is doing. Toggling it on or off allows players who haven't honed their skills to have a suitable advantage. Each of the computer racers is diligent in using power-ups and, regardless of skill, the game will remain a challenge to most players. Though the Adventure mode is the bulk of the game, Time Trial Arcade and Two-Player mode allow for more versatile use of the game, with head-to-head competition making a nice addition. A split screen slightly compresses the track, but minimally alters the view in Two-Player mode. Following the instruction manual's directions for adjusting the controls simplifies things when two players are sitting at the keyboard. In Two-Player Battle mode there is no track to follow, allowing players to freely drive where they want, while acquiring the same power-ups available in Adventure mode. Blasting homing missiles and rockets at their opponent and making clever use of shields and invisibility, the last player with a semblance of a vehicle is the winner.

Win or lose, this two-player game is a blast. Even with occasional glitches in the cars' movement, LEGO Racers 2 still flows and responds well for a keyboard-controlled racing game. Though winning isn't an easy feat, there is enjoyment in the pursuit. Whether racing against the computer or a friend, kids who enjoy the versatility of LEGOS will enjoy this game and the competition.Graphics: Good 3D graphics and relatively fluid movement with only a few delays.Sound: Up-beat music accompanied by various sound effects lend to the excitement.Enjoyment: Depends greatly upon the child, but most racing enthusiasts will enjoy it -- especially the Two-Player mode.Replay Value: The racing Adventure mode, while fun, may not elicit repeated tries, yet the Two-Player mode allows for extended play with friends. People who downloaded Lego Racers 2 have also downloaded:Lego Racers, LEGO Stunt Rally, Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge, LEGO Island, LEGO: Legoland, Lego Loco, Lego Rock Raiders, Lego Alpha Team

SEA LIFE Aquarium Kansas City & LEGOLAND® Discovery Center are on our list! LEGO Racers is a power-up based racing game similar to Mario Kart. It is one of the earliest LEGO video games and was the flagship LEGO console game for the N64/PlayStation era. Players are able to custom build their own LEGO minifig and car. The construction of a player's car does not affect racing outside of the size of the car chassis. Players then race their custom driver and car against other human or AI controlled characters for three laps around a course. The courses have varying environments that affect the driving, such as sand, ice, and regular road. The environment is also dynamic and certain parts of the course may attempt to slow the player down. Power-ups, in the form of LEGO bricks, are spread throughout the course. These are similar to Mario Kart items, but have an interesting LEGO-style way of being "constructed" to form new power-ups.

There are four families of power-ups, each with a corresponding brick color. Green bricks give a speed power-up, red bricks give a projectile power-up that can be fired at opponents to slow them down, yellow bricks give trap power-ups that can be dropped for opponents to run into, and blue bricks give shield power-ups that protect against traps and projectiles. There are also white bricks on the course that combine with the color bricks to give an increase in level for that family of power up. Up to three white bricks can be attached to a color brick. For example, a red brick with no white bricks constructed with it will give the player a cannon ball to shoot at opponents, but a red brick with 3 white bricks will give the player three homing rockets to fire. Each course also includes at least one short cut. Sometimes the player must use a power-up to access the short cuts. For example, a wall might need to be destroyed by some kind of projectile to reveal the short cut behind it.

There are three main modes of racing in LEGO Racers. Circuit race, where players compete against 5 AI characters including a boss character over 4 courses; versus race, where players can compete against other humans on the same system; and time race, where players compete against a single, much more difficult ghost AI car that is not affected by items. There is also a single race option - which is basically just playing one track of a circuit race - and a test drive track, where players can freely drive around in their custom built cars. LEGO Racers faithfully uses LEGO pieces for the characters, cars, buildings and power-ups in the game. The graphics are simplistic, but perfectly adequate, since LEGO shapes aren't that complex. All of the bricks for the car, the character faces, and all the other parts are versions of real LEGO pieces that players might be familiar with. The courses themselves are not LEGO and have a bit of a cartoonish feel to them. While racing, there is also a HUD that displays a place, lap time, the current power-up, and a minimap.

There is not a strong narrative to the game. However, there are 7 circuit races and each is only unlocked when the player achieves 2nd place or better in the previous circuit. The boss characters for each circuit have a preferred power-up family that they will favor when given a choice. An interesting note is that the first three circuits' and the second three circuits' tracks are mirrors of each other, although the boss characters for those circuits differ. Additionally, if a player places first in a circuit, they also unlock the boss character's car set. This means they can then use the bricks from the boss character's car in the car builder. The final circuit contains only one track and is run by the boss character Rocket Racer, who has an extra cool cut scene for his introduction. The ghost car in time race is a character named Veronica Voltage. Earning a time faster than her on all tracks will unlock her car set. The game is considered "beaten" when the player unlocks all the car sets.

This game is built for the computers and consoles of 1999. The player views the 3D world through a 3rd person stereoscopic camera focused on their character and car. Each track is designed with collision detection for rocks, buildings, and other obstacles on the map. AI players use a waypoint-following algorithm to steer. Multiplayer is enabled through keyboard sharing on the computer. LEGO Racers is extremely fun for children under 10, particularly if they play with LEGO outside of the game. It can be fun and nostalgic for older players, but the game is not difficult enough to be engaging for experienced players for very long. The storyline, while small, is very engaging for young players. The boss characters, particularly Rocket Racer have some personality to draw players in. The game is not very mechanically complicated, but it does everything quite well. The best part of the game is unlocking the boss characters' car sets, which are much cooler than the basic bricks the player has to build with at the beginning.
