The LEGO Group began in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter living in Denmark. The original blocks were made of wood, but today the company creates automatic binding bricks of plastic. The popularity of LEGO has lead to theme parks, retail stores dedicated to the brand, and kits that create everything from the Galactic Empire's Death Star to entire villages. With LEGO bricks you can build a variety of boats: even motorized ones able to sail the seas - or at least the bathtub. One of the easiest nautical designs to master is the simple sailboat. Necessary Materials to Build a LEGO Boat Hull of the Boat 1-by-2 plates as needed 1-by-2 bricks with an inverted 45-degree slope

Add two 2-by-10 red plates to the center of the base plate. Place them so the two ends touch each other in the middle of the plate. The other ends should extend out past the bottom plate to make the center section of the hull. Add two 1-by-8 plates on each side. Connect the two plates in the center the same way you did the 2-by-10s to create the curve of the hull. Add two 1-by-6 plates on each side to continue the curvature of the hull. Attach as many plates as needed to finish the bottom of the hull. It should curve evenly on both sides.
Build up the sides of the boat, using the inverted bricks. Start by adding the 1-by-2 inverted bricks in the center of one side of the hull. Connect as many bricks vertically as you want to create the hull depth. Add 2-by-2 inverted bricks on each side of the center 1-by-2s to extend the hull lengthwise. Continue to add inverted bricks to each side until you complete the hull end pieces. Add a 1-by-6 brick in the center of the hull, lying flat down the middle, so it cuts the hull in half. Add to this block to build up the side walls of the hull that connect the two end pieces. Connect two 1-by-10 plates together to form a 90-degree angle. Place the angle on the table with the corner facing the left. One line should be at the top. Connect a 1-by-8 to the second peg from the corner with the end of the plate pointing down towards you. Skip a row and place a 1-by-6 in on the next peg so it is parallel with the 1-by-8. Skip a row and place a 1-by-4 in on the next peg so it is parallel with the 1-by-6.
Place a 1-by-3 in the peg next to the 1-by-4. Add a 1-by-2 in the next peg and a 1-by-1 in the last available peg. Flip the piece over and repeat the process on the other side, putting the pegs on the empty line to create a crisscross pattern. This is the front of the sail. Make a second sail the same way for the back. Press the two pieces together to form one solid triangle. To create the mast, attach three round pieces together and add a corner plate and lamp holder. Repeat this step three times and then attach the separate sections together. Now, all that is left to do is attach the three separate sections together to complete the boat. Connect the sail to the lamp holders on the mast. Place the mast in the center of the hull. For this simple sailboat, you can get the pieces from one of the large classic LEGO sets. You can expand the size of your boat by adding more pieces as you build and then include a second and third mast and sail.
You can even build more elaborate boats using one of the LEGO kits available on eBay, like a police boat, fishing boat, and a riptide racer.
