“After a prolonged period of declines and stagnation the UK toys and games market returned to growth in 2014,” said Mykola Golovko, senior analyst of toys and games at Euromonitor. “We saw recovery in several categories, but the 15pc growth in construction toys on the back of the Lego movie release was the main story in traditional toys and games. “It was also a big year for video games as the release of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2013 started an upgrade cycle lasting through the entire 2014 with static console sales increasing 72pc compared to 2013.” Lego surpassed Mattel to become the world’s largest toymaker last year, after merchandise related to its blockbuster film led the Danish company to a record year. The Barbie maker also suffered at the hands of Frozen, as dolls of princesses Elsa and Anna stole the crown from the iconic American figurine and took Disney to its strongest quarter in company history. Overall, the retail value of the global toys and games market increased by 6.1pc, double its growth rate from the previous year, to reach £91.8bn.
The UK is the world’s third largest toy market, behind the US and China, which surpassed the UK in 2012 following several years of growth of between 10pc and 15pc.
