The amount of memory for storing programs, sounds, data files and other things on this device is simply pitiful. The menu system is visual - it's a series of pictures - that is good for kids - but it could be vastly improved and updated.Lego toys are of course very expensive, and the whole kit skimps on the plastic parts which are included.
It's important to pick up a grab bag of extra parts elsewhere (such as on Ebay) if you want the richest Mindstorms experience you or your kid can have.It's very challenging to program the NXT to make your robot do specific things in an exact manner. Because of this, certainly the Mindstorms kit is enjoyable by kids for many years, well into their early teens. There's a whole lot to learn. From this sprang a large number of 'Text Based' programming Languages, such as C and Java. To LEGO's credit, they didn't send in the Lawyers, but embraced what had been achieved by the many Mindstorms users.Prior to the release in 2006, the LEGO 8547: Mindstorms NXT 2.0: Robot, LEGO made the decision to make the both the NXT Programmable Brick's Software & Hardware "Open Source".
