As a child, she attempted to steal food from a young Charles Xavier, disguised as his mother (due to her being a homeless orphan) but Charles found out who she really was as he knew his mother would never go in his kitchen. When Mystique revealed her true form, she also revealed her name, Raven Darkholme. Charles let her live with him as his adoptive sister. When they grew up, they met a mutant named Erik Lensherr who had the ability to control metal.
