Click here to find out more 'Force Awakens' in Tesco veg ahead of Thursday's Star Wars premiere Tesco has tapped into the hysteria and anticipation surrounding this Thursday's (17 December) premiere of 'The Force Awakens' with a vegetable-led tribute to Star Wars. The ads play on arguably the most famous line from the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy - "I am your father" - which Darth Vader utters to his son, Luke Skywalker, much to the latter’s horror. However, instead of being played by a costumed and masked David Prowse, the role of the Sith Lord is taken by a carrot, tomato and corn cob, with the young Skywalker played by a respective baby version of the veg. The campaign is designed to boost awareness of and drive footfall for Tesco’s ‘The Star Wars’ weekend.

The popular toymaker has confirmed prices will go up by an average of 5 per cent next year. The hike comes into effect from New Year's Day and is a reaction to the slump in sterling since the EU Referendum in June, which saw millions of Brits back Brexit with a vote to leave the European Union. Lego is blaming the collapse in the value of the pound since the UK's vote to leave the EU. The pound has fallen by up to 20 per cent against the dollar alone since the Brexit vote but is currently trading at $1.27 - 14 per cent down on its pre-Referendum level.




Against the euro, sterling remains 8.8 per cent weaker. The company say that, while it was raising the prices it charged retailers to stock its products, it was up to stores to decide if they passed on the increase. A letter by Fiona Wright, the general manager and vice president of Lego, surfaced on Reddit, confirming the increase. The letter, shared on Twitter as well, says that the increase in prices is a “direct result of the continued devaluing of the UK pound”. It adds that Lego will try to “minimise” the consumer sales impact. Details of the recipient of the letter have been withheld and there is no indication of where the document initially originated from. The Lego group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen and his grandchild Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is now the family's main representative. The company is the latest firm to warn of rising costs, with a weaker sterling making imported products - such as food ingredients - more expensive. In October, food supplier Unilever gave scores of Birmingham shoppers a headache when some of their much-loved brands were removed from supermarket giant Tesco.
