Check out funny outtakes, see how Legos are made, enjoy a sing along and more in our review! Emmet (voice of Chris Pratt) is a joyful tiny “everyman” construction worker who could never be a hero. He’s even boring to his so-called friends. When evil mega-mogul Lord Business (voice of Will Ferrell) decides to use a major weapon to glue the city and everyone in it in any form he likes, it’s up to Emmet to save the day. Emmet goes about his day singing the local anthem “Everything is Awesome” along with everyone else in town until hot Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) tells him he needs to save the city. In an isolated cavern, Emmet becomes attached to the Piece of Resistance, a mysterious red block that an ancient legend foretells will be wielded by a savior called "The Special." That has to be him!
Emmet soon learns that he has become “somebody” very quickly. Emmet is arrested by a corrupt good cop/bad cop in one policeman (Liam Neeson). He understands that he's now a dangerous rebel leader with the key to save his world. He is both aided and sometimes hindered by heroes of several of the LEGO realms; Wyldstyle of course, her “boyfriend” Batman (Will Arnett), wise sage Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), corny space astronaut Benny (Charlie Day), pirate/cyborg Metal Beard (Nick Offerman) and colorful but very weird, happy, happy Unikitty (Alison Brie). They all must make sure Emmet and his Piece of Resistance can stop Lord Business (Will Ferrell) who will use The Kragle (aka superglue) to shape the city and its inhabitants into whatever form he wishes. Kidzworld got the “Everything is Awesome Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack” containing the 3-D version of the movie plus a good 2D version, a cute 3-D portrait of Emmet and a swell mini-LEGO figure of the Vitruvius character…
Besides looking and sounding great, this set provides: Feature Commentary - with Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord. They are joined by actors Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Alison Brie and Wyldstyle Elizabeth Banks on the phone for a silly, fact-filled chat during the movie. Sometimes they are way off subject and you can’t tell who is talking but it’s certainly entertaining. Batman: A True Artist , Michelangelo and Lincoln: History Cops and enter the Ninjago- are all very short films starring LEGO characters that appear to be made by fans but could be the filmmakers having fun. Bringing LEGO to Life – is a fun, behind-the-scenes featurette narrated by Chris Pratt that gives you a little insight into the making of the movie but no great details. You do get a trip to the factory in Denmark where LEGOs are made. “Everything is Awesome” sing-along – Okay this is a karaoke-style music video that you can sing and party to but wow, will that silly song get stuck in your head forever or what?
Stories from the Story Team- This is a quick trip through the development of the story using storyboards. Storyboard artists show you scenes that were cut, entire lands left out and other cute stuff you missed. Quite a fun extra. See It, Built It! - This is fun for LEGO builders and newbies alike. You are encouraged to build some of the vehicles and props from the film and then add stuff and be creative! You get "Introduction with Senior Designer Michael Fuller," "Build the Double-Decker Couch," "Build Emmet's Car," "Introduction with Modeling Artist Adam Ryan," "Digital Double-Decker Couch" and "Digital Emmet's Car." Get some LEGOs and join in. Fan-Made Films: Top-Secret Submissions – we get clips from several homemade animated shorts, with the top three winners of a recent LEGO-hosted contest presented in their entirety. Alleyway Test- Wyldstyle builds a motorcycle out of things in an alley. This was the film's first animation test. Deleted Scenes – These are storyboarded scenes cut early in the production.
Especially fun is a scene in which Batman and Emmet argue over how they feel about Wyldstyle. Outtakes – This is a funny blooper reel using the voice actor’s goof ups but coming from the mouths of the LEGO characters. Dream Job: Meet the LEGO Builders – Wow, designing and building LEGOs for a living? These master builders are seen in action and then building the massive basement set we see in live action at the end of the movie. In the LEGO world, the adjoining kingdoms, well, don’t make much sense. Adults don’t really get why Superman (in this film, Channing Tatum), Abraham Lincoln (Will Forte), Gandalf the Grey (Todd Hansen), Wonder Woman and Shaquille O'Neal would co-exist and interact. Why would Star Wars characters like Lando Calrissian (of course Billy Dee Williams) know anything about Green Lantern (Jonah Hill)? But see, that is the fun of LEGO and this film reflects that. It’s crazy, funny, witty, nonsensical and high energy the whole way. The extras will please LEGO buffs and newbies alike.
I would have liked to have seen more of making the actual movie, maybe more of the voice actors in the recording booths or talking more about their characters. For example Morgan Freeman (Vitruvius) isn’t around at all. But, is this set way cute and enjoyable and worth keeping and dragging out when you need cheering up? We go 4 stars. The LEGO Movie Blu-ray Rating: The LEGO Movie is available on Blu-ray now!The Lego Movie is now in stores, and I have a great opportunity for you to win your very own copy of the Blu-Ray! If you didn’t catch this one in theaters, and even if you did, you’re going to want this one at home. A surprisingly solid effort, this one has something for everyone, and is far more hilarious than it has any right to be. Plus, it has a lot of heart, and spins a great story. It seems like every family movie released wants to call itself an instant classic, but even I think it applies to this one. It isn’t just that it’s a lot of fun, and will entertain the kids, but it also has an awesomely anti-corporate society backdrop that is rather surprising, and a nice treat for any film to dare aim at younger audiences.
