On the one hand you’ve got emulated PS2 games coming to the PS4, but you can’t use original discs so Sony wants you to purchase those old games all over again. On the other hand there’s PlayStation Now, which offers a growing list of PS3 games streamed to your PS4. The problem with PlayStation Now is the fact it’s so expensive. A single month costs $19.99 or three month is $44.99. Nobody wants to pay such a high subscription charge, and it seems as though Sony is waking up to that fact. As part of the PlayStation Experience last week, Sony announced that PlayStation Now is dropping its price to $99.99 for a 12-month plan. So instead of paying $19.99 a month you’re being asked to pay just $8.33.
That’s a near 60% discount and much easier to stomach. The price drop is not permanent. Sony is classing it as a special offer, but I suspect (and hope) it will stick. People are used to paying around this price point for streaming services (e.g. Netflix) and hopefully it’s a price that still allows Sony to run PS Now without incurring a loss. That will rely on lots of new gamers opting to subscribe, though. So if you’ve been considering PS Now, now really is the time to give it a go and help Sony decide $100 is a price worth making permanent. If you’re unsure whether your Internet connection is good enough for PS Now game streams, Sony offers a 7-day free trial for you to try the service out. 250 games are available during the trial, with over 400 available on the full service.
