In a sense, this might be true for big budget AAA titles, but we shouldn’t forget that the expansion of the video game industry has allowed the possibility for anyone to make anything, including multiplayer games. So, here’s a list of PS4 games that you can play with friends, family or foe. Guitar Hero Live/Rock Band 4 Everyone likes to rock out. Music is something that everyone can relate to, even your family. So sit down, or stand up, and jam out to Guitar Hero or Rock Band 4. It’ll kill a couple hours and you’ll have a great time. The games and equipment are fairly pricey but if you can foot the bill, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are both great games for local multiplayer play. Hey, remember that game that didn’t win PlayStation’s Vote to Play? No, you probably don’t. Zombie Vikings fell under the radar after losing the vote to it’s competition but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. This hack and slash game was built for co-op. Everything in this game was designed with multiple players in mind.

While the online functionality may have had a rocky launch, the issues have largely been fixed since launch and the core mechanics of the game have always been solid. You can check out our review here. Fulfill your dream of dragging around your father’s casket in this hilarious physics based puzzle co-op experience. You, and a friend, will be tasked to find your father a proper resting space. Let’s hope you have strong biceps, and if you don’t? You will by the end of Chariot. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Classic Lara Croft is back but in a not-so-classic fashion. You explore a tomb, solving puzzles to progress, with up to 3 other players. This co-op isometric puzzle solving adventure flew under the radar for many, but the game is great, especially with others. It won indie game of the year at the Video Game Awards 2015, and for damn good reason. Rocket League gives you awesome booster rigged vehicles and throws in a soccer ball with 2 goals on either side for some competitive multiplayer fun.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III Call of Duty has been a staple in multiplayer for a long while. Whether it’s on the couch with your buddies or online with 12 year olds, Call of Duty has a mode for it. Black Ops III is no different, it builds on the same formula that has worked for the Call of Duty franchise for quite some time and includes the fundamental satisfying shooting mechanics that have made the game the behemoth that it is. Sports Games (NBA, NHL, Madden) Sports games may not be something that your average hardcore gamer has sitting on his shelf but when your looking for a local coop/competitive game to play, especially with people who aren’t as tuned into gaming culture as us, they are a great thing to pull out. Anyone can sit down, be given a controller tutorial, and get straight into the game because sports are easily approachable. So if you’re looking to play games with someone who may not be a gamer, sports games are a great starting point. If you’re going to sit around the couch and play with a couple friends, some of them may not be gamers.

Monopoly is a quintessential game to have for those occasions, not to mention the fact that it’s darn fun to play even if you are a gamer. Instead of pulling out a cumbersome piece of cardboard, let’s play Monopoly Plus on the television, where we don’t have to set up these dumb pieces too. One of the most unique action adventure that you will ever play, Magicka 2 has you run around combining elements and casting spells. Don’t let it’s looks fool you, it may seem like an everyday isometric action adventure game but the barrier to entry is fairly high due to the convoluted nature of combat. Great if your playing with other gamers who are willing to learn but stay away from it if your with people who are new to games. If you’re looking to assert your dominance or simply have a lot of competitive spirit, fighting games may be the way to go to quench your local multiplayer needs. Mortal Kombat X is an especially good choice because of the games aesthetic. Even people who aren’t playing will be having fun watching the players yell and scream as they’re massacred in the most brutal ways.

A fair warning though, Mortal Kombat X is not for the feint of heart. If you’re just looking to school some fools for a couple quick rounds, why not go back to the basics and pull out a classic gem. Tetris may not have included multiplayer in it’s original form but if we look at the enhanced version that Ubisoft has created for us, it can create some intense fun. LEGO games are known for vast amounts of content and approachable gameplay, which makes them perfect for local coop play. When you mix the classic LEGO formula with Marvel, a brand that is proliferating well with mainstream pop culture, you get a game that is easy for most people to wrap their head around. Run around as the Hulk, smash things and collects LEGOs? Sounds like a fun time to me. Mercenary Kings is a retro-inspired 2D side-scrolling shoot-em-up. It supports up to 4 players in the hectic action and makes for a great time with friends, especially considering the mission structure that can make for easy access to anything from quick bouts up to longer sessions.

A beautiful platformer that has been raved by critiques throughout the video game industry, Rayman Legends is a beautiful sequel to the original, Rayman Origins. Travel through various stages, jumping and collecting as you go. Rayman Legends supports up to 4 players. Helldivers is a hardcore twin stick shooter with up to 4 player cooperative play that flew fairly under the radar even though critiques praised it. It’s awesome but, beware, it’s really hard and friendly fire is always on. You will die, everyone will die, but it’s super fun and causes hilarious interactions. Towerfall Ascension is a 2D arena combat archery game. You need to use headstomps and a limited number of arrows to defeat the people sitting around you. It’s not easy but it is fun and, as all good local multiplayer should, it will always result in a screaming match. Pixel Junk games are always cute and interesting and Pixel Junk Shooter Ultimate is no exception. Supporting two player coop play, this twin stick shooter has you solving puzzles and fighting off obstacles.

Communication will be required. Fat Princess Adventures is an Action-RPG brimming with humour. There’s no shortage of references to pop culture, memes and puns in this 4 player coop adventure. So if you and your friends/family like to joke around while playing games, Fat Princess Adventures is a great game to pick up. Guns, Gore and Cannoli is a 2D shoot-em-up that supports up to 4 players in local coop. It’s enjoyable, kinda funny and if you want to know more about it, you can read our review here. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Diablo III, if you didn’t already know, if an isometric action RPG that has you exploring dungeons and finding loot. Though, what you probably didn’t know is that it has local coop. Just make sure that the second player is signed into PSN when they make their character or it will disappear forever. With so many game recommendations, there is no way that you’re leaving this list without at least a couple that you want to play, so call up some friends and family and set up a game night.
