Which is great news as, despite mass prototype playing-with by the press, actual consumer VR has been pretty painful so far, with only Samsung and its fledgling phone-powered Gear VR really launching for mass consumption. But as HTC and Valve promise to waft their Vive VR rival in our faces by the end of this year, like a virtual red flag to a virtual bull, Oculus VR has gone one further and let us all in on the minimum specifications our computers will need to be able to tap into their vision of the future. And it's fair to say anyone with an average-speed PC need not apply.Building yourself a VR-ready PCThe official specs to bear in mind are as follows:GPU: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater

CPU: Intel i5-4590 CPU equivalent or greater RAM: 8GB or greaterRight now, that's a fairly hefty system. To give you an idea, if you aren't into individual component pricing, the graphics card will cost PC self-builders around £300, with the processor coming in at about £160. RAM isn't too costly these days, so that will set you back another £50 - so that's about £510 in the core components. But then, of course, you'll also need a motherboard, power supply, hard drive and a case to make the recommended machine. Put simply, you could probably get a machine up and running for just shy of £1,000 now that would be a good companion for Rift when it launches.Building your own machine can often be the best way of getting a good gaming PC. It's not particularly hard, but does require some effort upfront and investing in components that work well with each other. But there are simpler ways, too.Buy a VR-capable machine right nowIf you want an off-the-shelf VR machine, and you want it now, then Alienware has its Area-51, which for £1,800 fits the VR specification bill perfectly and can also be an amazing gaming rig for today.

You can drive a 4K monitor with it, even in Grand Theft Auto V, which is a beast for specs in its own right.Get VR on a laptopIf you're looking for a laptop to turn into your own portable VR games machine, you can pretty much forget about it for a bit. No doubt this will be possible next year some time, maybe in time for the Rift's launch, but it will require a big leap. There are, however, some laptops that can connect to a PC graphics card, via an external box, and produce near-desktop level graphics for around £2,200. Alienware has one of these, as does MSI, called the GS30 2M Shadow.VR on your Apple MacForget it. Sadly, there are numerous reasons that you won't be seeing Oculus Rift on a Mac anytime soon. The biggest problem is that there is no Mac on the market that has the required GPU power. Even the Darth Vader helmet-like Mac Pro or the latest 5K iMac, which are monster machines in their own right, don't have enough GPU power to handle VR gaming. They are set up as high-resolution workstations.
