Meanwhile Lego has also just announced a new range of sets to tie-in with Disney's remake of the Lone Ranger. That gave us an idea.Could we use the Lone Ranger Constitution Train Chase set with the Lego DeLorean to recreate the final, action-packed train sequence at the end of Back To The Future III? We got building to find out.The Lego Back To The Future set (£34.99) comes in a presentation box that is big enough to keep the finished model, a 105 page instruction book rather than pamphlet, and of course Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and all the parts you'll need to recreate the DeLorean from BTTF, BTTF 2 and BTTF 3. Because this is a Cuusoo set there is also a little on the original designers.When it comes to building the DeLorean the instructions are fairly easy to follow, although the instructions could have been clearer in showing which grey to use. There is a lot of grey pieces and a few times we selected the wrong tone of grey, only to have to go back and do it again.That said, the level of detail here is great, from the time-setting display, 1985 and 2015 licence plates, the all-important flux capacitor, and even Mr Fusion on the back - although, disappointingly, the word "Shield" is spelt "sheild" on the Flux Capacitor.Marty and Doc are both dressed from the first movie, complete with skateboard for Marty.
But you don't get any other outfits. That said it's easy to commandeer outfits from other Lego minifigs - that's wCuusooat we did for Marty's yellow radioactive suit in our pictures.Changing between the three different cars from the three movies is very easy. For BTTF2 you get red wheels, Mr Fusion, and a new numberplate, while BTTF3 brings junk that Doc Brown bolts on in the shoesmith's studio.The only real complaint is that it's hard to get both in the driver's cockpit at the same time, but it's not the end of the world.This is a lovely set that will give you a build time of around an hour, but that's irrelevant - what's important here is that you're getting a time machine, and if you are a fan of the movie and Lego, you won't be disappointed.Different movie, no connection, but it has an amazing-looking train that is a doppelganger for the one in BTTF3.That's handy, because it's served our purpose for recreating the final scene in BTTF3. But if you're not fussed about a Michael J Fox movie from the 1990s then what about the set as a standalone piece?
It costs £79.99 and we are hugely surprised at how many pieces you get and how much fun there is compared to some of the Star Wars sets of the same price.Here you get the main locomotive, a coal tender, a further gun trailer, and a prison car, as well as seven minifig characters including The Lone Ranger, Tonto, Rebecca Reid, Danny Reid, Butch Cavendish, Latham Cole and Captain Fuller, oh, and the Lone Ranger's horse.The set, which will take you a couple of hours to build, comes with the train, a basic circular track, and a few bits of scenery to help set the scene.There's plenty here to play with and plenty of options to build with the two instruction bookets guiding you through the whole process with ease.The only thing to bear in mind is that, fully built, the train track does take up quiet a large space - most of a medium sized kitchen table - so make sure you bear that in mind. You don't have to have it in a full loop however, as the track separates into 20 different sections (4 straights, 16 curves).
What's guaranteed is that fans of the new movie will happily be able to recreate the chase sequence in which The Lone Ranger has to save Rebecca and Danny from Butch Cavendish and his gang of henchmen on board the speeding train. Yep, we went there doing our best to recreate the final scene. If we are being honest, the DeLorean is a touch too big, but Great Scott it looks wonderful.
