The same could be said of Lego toys, which have been igniting the imaginations of many children (including this young author) since 1949. It’s fitting, then, to combine the two, and one enterprising Lego enthusiast is trying to make it happen with his Jeep Wrangler Rubicon kit. Using the Lego Ideas crowdsourcing platform, Chiho Kim’s Rubicon prototype looks a lot like the Jeep many of you have in your driveway, with a removable hardtop, half-doors, the traditional Jeep seven-slat grille, and fender badges that recall the “Trail Rated” units found on fullsize Wranglers.
Even the door handles are a dead lock for the real thing. More photos can be found at the designer’s Flickr account. The Lego version also features adventure gear, such as hazard cones, a fire extinguisher, and a miniature DSLR camera with a wildlife-friendly telephoto lens. This version is black with a tan interior, and the dash is equipped with a big navigation screen, perfect for off-roading or overlanding adventures. In order for Kim’s design to become a toy store reality, he or she needs to acquire the support of 10,000 Lego enthusiasts. If that happens, the Lego Review Board will evaluate the Wrangler Rubicon for marketability and feasibility, and if it passes that stage, Lego designers will transform the Jeep into an actual Lego set to be sold around the world. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon you see here was built by a fan, and it needs support from more than 10,000 people before Lego will put it into production.The project was submitted to the Lego Ideas website, a portal that allows fans to post their creations for a chance to eventually be mass-produced by the Danish toy company. Users pledge their support for a project, and if enough people get behind it in the allotted amount of time Lego green-lights it for production. Obviously, for something like this FCA would also have to get involved at some point for licensing purposes. But why wouldn’t they want this uncanny mini Jeep to hit toy store shelves? The Lego Wrangler’s creator is Chiho Kim, who says the hardest part was joining the curved hood with the fenders. Though he came up with a solution, he says a better way would need to be found if it were to be approved for mass production. We agree that the hood (and the engine bay) could use some work, but otherwise the build is pretty spot-on.
Kim says the Jeep is the same scale as the VW camper van, Beetle, and Mini Cooper, riding on 62mm tires.
