I may even let them play with it.LOS ANGELES — Aldrich Killian toy collectors and cosplayers: this is a day for gratitude. We've just learned that your unforgettable, enduringly iconic Iron Man 3 villain was originally written as — brace yourselves here — a woman. Alas, Marvel brass (at the time) realized that the gender of the secretive "Mandarin," who turned out to be a 50-something tech entrepreneur in a tan business suit, needed swift correction. Because as everyone knows, girls don't sell toys. Thanks to that pervasive, never-proven-wrong notion, the Aldrich Killian™ line of Marvel merch, with its commercially optimized perceived anatomy, exists to this day. SEE ALSO: Marvel defends 'Doctor Strange' casting with new character info Uproxx reporter Mike Ryan, who has an uncanny knack for digging news nuggets out of what should be routine filmmaker Q&As, pried this gem from Iron Man 3 writer/director Shane Black (who is promoting his new film The Nice Guys):

"There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem. Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft. We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand and we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female. Now, that’s not [Marvel Studios head Kevin] Feige. That’s Marvel corporate, but now you don’t have that problem anymore." Black's not-so-subtly referring to Ike Perlmutter, longtime CEO of Marvel Entertainment (including its toy division), whose influence over Marvel Studios was revoked last year when Feige demanded that he begin reporting to Disney bosses instead. But before Feige's power move, the notoriously stingy and immovable Perlmutter called the shots. And it's a good thing, too — because Aldrich Killian fans would've been deprived of one — or possibly two — plastic representations of Guy Pearce's legendary turn as the meek-IT-guy-turned-mogul.

"Sorry, but the Mandarin turned out to be a girl?" There are probably others as well, to the enrichment of Marvel Entertainment shareholders the world over. Have something to add to this story? For a start, you get 5 minifings, including Pepper Potts and Tony Stark (exclusive to this set currently) as well at the Mark 42 armour.

If you have seen the film, you will know that Pepper ends up wearing the armour for a little while, so this set is perfect to play out that scene if you wish. You also get The Mandarin and one of his foot soldiers (another exclusive). I guess he's not really a minifig, but you also get Tony's robot, DUM-E, complete with his extinguisher and the Mark 5 suitcase, which is a nice nod to the 1st and 2nd films. My 9 year old thinks he's hilarious, so he is a welcome edition to the set.The helicopter is pretty robust and the lab is a little complex to build in places, so parental help may be needed for younger children. But once built, it is a really neat and compact representation of Tony's somewhat larger lab in the movie. My boy has great fun blowing it up and putting it back together.Sometimes, Lego release a set that appears to be priced to low and is a bargain. This is one of those sets. Six figures (including DUM-E), a great vehicle and a "base" (as my son calls them) that is lab make this a 5 star purchase.

If you're fed up of playing the Stark or Pepper Potts you can switch allegiances and play an Extremis soldier or the lead bad guy - The Mandarin. As in the new Iron Man 3 film The Mandarin comes with his own attack helicopter with missiles to take out the beach house. The model itself, like so many of the Marvel sets from Lego, comes with plenty of features to help you destroy it without actually destroying it.Build wise, the set is fairly straightforward to build (around 50 minutes if you are going for it, although there are points where you'll have to pay attention - not because it is hard, but because there is plenty in the instructions with pieces that aren't as straightforward as they seem.A basic set in terms of what it does, but married with the film it’s a diorama that offers plenty for those that like to retell the scene in the film.Either way, we can't get over just how menacing the Iron Man minifig really is. parents can find all the advice they will need to keep their children safe online.
