Since its explosive E3 reveal this summer, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers has been blowing the minds of gamers all across the world with its amazing trailers, character reveals and demos… but the handheld version has remained mysterious, without a single screenshot, tweet or teaser to ogle. Well rest easy 3DS and Vita fans, we aren’t hiding. The handheld version is bigger than ever, jam-packed with exciting features that we’re really proud of, and there are some big reveals on the way in the VERY near future.

In the meantime though, I wanted to dispel some of the mystery and give you all a first look at some of our content, while providing some insight into how we approached the games design. When I watched the first Avengers film in the cinema, long before I ever dreamed I’d be working on a game of it just 3 years later, there were immediately a dozen scenes that jumped out as being perfect videogame sequences. The pacing, the boss fights, the skydives, the chases, the big battles and grand set pieces, it was all there. For me, the most important and exciting thing that sets videogames apart from movies is the power of interaction. Interaction is what allows videogames to elevate their audience from a spectator and put the action in their hands. No longer watching the heroes on the big screen, gamers get to rip through the sky as Iron Man, they get to smash through walls as Captain America, and they get to punch a big alien fish in the face. I think when people pick up the videogame version of their favourite movie, they want to live and breathe those iconic, memorable moments, from the big screen.

They’ve already watched them from afar, but this is their chance to play them. With that in mind, it was important those scenes that jumped out in the cinema, those moments everyone remembers, are front and centre in our LEGO videogame. More than ever, I think fans will be very impressed with the accuracy we have pushed for between the game and the films. I’ve included a few of my favourites below, see if you can recognise these iconic sequences! Skydiving down the side of Stark Tower as Tony Stark, while the MK7 pod chases after him Attempting to escape Hulk as he rampages through the engineering deck of the Helicarrier Getting the Helicarrier’s damaged fan started with a manual push from Iron Man Following Captain America’s orders, and blocking the Chitauri portal as Thor, using a super-charged Chrysler Building as a conductor Tearing through the backstreets of Seoul as Black Widow, in a daring attempt to get Captain America’s fallen shield back to him before Ultron gets the upper hand

Wiping the smile of Loki’s face and showing him who the “puny god” is with a few well deserved Hulk smashes during a stylish disco party. (Ok, we might have added the stylish disco party.) Using Quicksilvers super speed to snatch civilians out of harm’s way as a runaway train crashes through the streets of Seoul As well as putting these movie moments in the hands of gamers, one other thing that was very important to us in making LEGO Marvel’s Avengers was creating a varied and versatile experience for players. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is such rich and diverse source material, with so many characters, powers and types of action to draw on, we knew the game had to be just as rich and diverse. As we’re always listening to the fans, we also know that more than ever, players want fresh and exciting gameplay options to mix up the classic LEGO gameplay they know and love. This was just a really quick sneak peek at some of our levels and sequences, we have so much more still to show, and some really exciting new features still to be revealed.
