LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game is een computerspel gebaseerd op de Star Warsspeelgoedlijn van LEGO. Het spel speelt zich af tijdens de prequeltrilogie van Star Wars (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones en Revenge of the Sith), met een bonussegment van A New Hope. LEGO Star Wars werd voor het eerst uitgebracht op 5 april 2005. Het spel werd ontwikkeld door Traveller's Tales voor de Microsoft Xbox en Sony PlayStation 2, en Microsoft Windows. Alle versies van het spel werden uitgebracht door Eidos Interactive en LucasArts.Maar ook buiten die groep deed het spel het goed. Het spel volgt dezelfde verhaallijn als die in Episodes I, II en III van Star Wars, maar met kleine verschillen. Scènes bevatten niet veel actie, en vaak is die actie aangepast om het er humoristische uit te laten zien. LEGO Star Wars bevat in totaal 56 bespeelbare personages. Deze personages zien er net zo uit als echte LEGO-poppetjes, maar met meer mobiliteit. Als ze sterven, vallen ze in onderdelen uit elkaar.
De meeste personages moeten worden ontsloten door levels uit te spelen of ze te kopen in Dexter's Diner. De personages zijn ingedeeld in verschillende groepen op basis van hun vaardigheden. Deze groepen zijn de Jedi, personages die blasters gebruiken, droids en kanselier Palpatine (die in zijn eentje in een aparte groep zit). LEGO Star Wars heeft een optie genaamd 'Free Play', waarmee de speler een level opnieuw kan spelen, maar dan met de mogelijkheid tijdens het spelen van personage te wisselen. Dit stelt spelers in staat bepaalde gebieden te bezoeken waar ze eerst niet bij konden. In Free Play mode kan een speler elk personage wat hij op dat moment heeft ontsloten gebruiken. Dexter's Diner is het gebied waar de speller kiest welk level hij of zij wil spelen. Ook bevindt zich hier een parkeerplaats waar de speler gevonden onderdelen van voertuigen kan gebruiken om voertuigen te repareren. Tevens kan de speler hier nieuwe personages ontsluiten. Elk level in LEGO Star Wars volgt losjes scènes uit de Star Warsfilms.
Er is geen gesproken dialoog. Het spel begint met Obi-Wan Kenobi en Qui-Gon Jinn in het Trade Federation schip, en eindigt met Anakin Skywalker en Obi-Wan Kenobi's duel op Mustafar. In elk van de 17 levels kan een speler een bepaald aantal LEGO-stenen verzamelen en hiermee speciale kits verdienen. Indien alle 17 kits zijn bemachtigd, krijgt de speler een bonuslevel gebaseerd op Episode IV: A New Hope. Reviews for LEGO® Star Wars™: The Force Awakens - Premium Edition The Lego games just keep getting better and better. Though not as long as past Lego Star Wars games because you only get 1 movie worth of content instead of 3, you will still get a few dozen hours of playtime with this game. It has the usual collectibles hidden throughout the levels and over 200 playable characters. Then you also get the season pass content, which so far has only added another few dozen characters, but will also give 3 more levels. The game is worth full price, the season pass is only worthy of a sale purchase though if you don't get the deluxe version of the game, as with every past Lego game DLC, the levels will likely be over in under 20 minutes each, and as the characters will have repeating skills that others that came with the game have, they aren't really necessary since they bring nothing new to the table to alter gameplay. Being based on 1 movie, I expected the game to be short, and it was.
I finished it in 8 hours, but it will easily take another 20+ hours to unlock all the characters, cheats, and bonus levels. The game has multiple hub worlds to explore like the recent Lego Avengers games, but I still prefer 1 massive connected world like in Lego Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, where you can go wherever you want whenever you want, rather than switching areas through a pause menu. As for the story, it follows the movie, but takes a lot of liberties and even adds in ideas not in the movie to flesh out the story a bit more. Unfortunately, this game doesn't have lightsaber battles. Even the one against Kylo Ren is more puzzle solving than actual fighting, which in itself is more relegated to quick time events, which nobody loves, but just won't go away in games nowadays. If you're a Star Wars fan, buy the game now, otherwise wait for a price drop, which seems to happen fast for the Lego games as they go on sale constantly and devalue to $20 within about 6 months.
