With that said, of course, there's always something to look out for, and this month proves no different. If you've finished the batch of games you received for Christmas, now's the time to start looking for something new to fill the void.

Ryan Brown and JC Suttun run down their picks of the bunch to keep 'em going until next month. I never got round to playing the original Halo Wars back on the 360, but from what I saw it looked like it did an admirable job of adapting a PC-focused genre to consoles, much like my beloved XCOM Enemy Unknown. While I’m sure this sequel won’t be dethroning Starcraft 2 anytime soon, an Xbox One exclusive that isn’t a driving or shooting game is always a welcome thing. Not too sure about the name of the game’s antagonist though. 'Atriox' sounds more like a Swedish death metal band or bathroom cleaner than an arch villain. This spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment is an RPG with a heavy focus on storytelling. Set one billion years in the future, the Earth has essentially returned to the Middle Ages following numerous cataclysms and disasters. The powerful technological remnants of previous civilisations are now regarded as essentially being magic, just like Arthur C Clarke said.

If that didn’t sound trippy enough, you play as the former vessel of an ancient disembodied consciousness, and will be able to gain control over other people’s lives in order to explore new dimensions. This blend of spiritualism and sci-fi sounds heavy going, but it looks like an ambitious and substantial game that might be worth getting your teeth into during these chilly winter evenings. The above video goes into some detail about the game's combat system, and reveals you can occasionally attempt to talk to enemies mid-battle to convince them to down arms and prove that love trumps hate. Originally released on PC in Japan at the end of 2006, this action RPG is getting another lease of life on the PlayStation 4 and Sony’s current handheld. I haven’t played any of the other titles in the Ys series, but I’m a sucker for a decent dungeon crawler. Its decadent soundtrack - complete with indulgent electric guitars, grand orchestral sweeps and understated piano ballads - is a glorious reminder of that era of video games.

In lieu of an actual time machine, Ys Origin might the next best way to transport myself back to my late teens/early twenties and briefly forget 2016 ever happened. ' When For Honor was first announced in 2015, it was introduced as a purely multiplayer experience, which tends to struggle garnering my interest. However, since then, this upcoming hack-and-slash game has incorporated a single-player campaign. Consider my interest piqued. Featuring a hand-to-hand combat system between historical soldiers such as medieval knights, samurai and vikings in a fantasy setting, this could satisfy my hack-and-slash itch before the new God of War game finally lands. And, of course, if you are actually interested in multiplayer gaming, For Honor's offerings are shaping up to be rather robust. It's an easy but necessary comparison to make: this is Minecraft, but with actual LEGO. There's nothing wrong with helping build a new sub-genre though, and Lego Worlds looks to be one of the most competent world-building games since the aforementioned phenomenon.

Created by the same studio behind most of the LEGO games, Lego Worlds blends together Minecraft's sandbox-style gameplay and many of the Lego games' fixtures; studs as currency, a plethora of playable characters, and tons of vehicles and weapons that effect the environment around you. Minecraft is undeniably great fun, and Lego Worlds looks to build upon the formula. After the mild success that was Super Mario Run, Nintendo's ready to give us their second mobile offering in the form of strategy series Fire Emblem. A grid-based tactical role-playing game, Fire Emblem Heroes will feature many of the cult series' famous faces, and will also launch for free (though it will contain in-app purchases). This won't be for everyone, but it's great to see Nintendo targeting all areas of their potential reach, and there is some great fun to be had for those that dive into deep mobile strategy games. Fire Emblem Heroes will likely end up a far larger hit in Asia than here in the West, but it's still sure to cause a buzz for certain groups of gamers.
