Central Florida will gain 152 new hotel rooms May 15 when the Legoland Florida Hotel opens, while the park will expand to include an area based on the Lego Friends line, the theme park announced Thursday in Winter Haven."The hotel behind me marks a significant shift from a day attraction to a resort destination," said Adrian Jones, general manager of the Legoland Florida Resort. Officials said they are filling a need for guests who want to spend more than a day at the resort. Other changes include offering hotel guests the chance to work with some of Legoland's master model builders.Legoland's Model Shop, where many of the park's elaborate pieces are created, will move from a backstage area into the hotel, said Jones. Sam Delessandro, Model Shop supervisor, said the classes will let hotel guests help create some of the theme park's models and show them the work that goes into creating the colorful characters they see in the park. More than 2,000 models have been made for the hotel, including a boy bellhop that Legoland officials are asking the public to help name through social media.
Some were on display Thursday, including a pirate, a monkey and a mouse dressed like adventurer Indiana Jones.Until Thursday's announcement, which included a hard-hat tour of the property, reservations at the brightly colored hotel had been available beginning June 15. As it stood Thursday, the hotel's interior was mostly drywall, doorless entryways and hanging wires and ductwork.Legoland Florida has been updated every year since opening in 2011. The water park was added in 2012, World of Chima opened in 2013 and Duplo Village, targeting young visitors, opened last year. Inside the theme park, just steps outside the hotel, the addition of Heartlake City is Lego's attempt to specifically target young girls, ages 6 to 10, with a combination of Lego horses, shades of pink and the world of characters Mia, Emma, Olivia, Andrea and Stephanie."It means we develop an older area of the park and veer into what Central Florida is synonymous with, which is princesses," said Jones.The addition features an indoor performance venue and show, shopping options and a disc-coaster called "Mia's Riding Adventure."
Riders will sit atop horses as they spin and propel up and down on a U-shaped coaster.It will open sometime in June, said Jones."It's a little bit of a moving target," said Jones. "We are on schedule, but we can't give you a clear date just yet."A similar addition is scheduled to open in Legoland California in May. The California park, however, will include different rides and an outdoor venue, said Jones.The hotel, located at the front entrance of the park, will be complete with an interactive play area, a pool and a restaurant.Keith Carr, senior project manager for Merlin Entertainments Group, the park's operator, said the on-site eatery will be called "Bricks Family Restaurant."It will feature child-height buffet counters and a theme of "organized chaos" with fake pies smashed against the wall and the look of a food fight as Lego models wreak havoc on the restaurant, said Carr, who oversees North America projects.A pool and splash area will be located behind the hotel, open year-round, unlike the water park.
