Founded in 1970 by a group of comic book, movie and science fiction fans – including the late Shel Dorf, Ken Krueger, and Richard Alf – Comic-Con International has grown from strength to strength, year after year; an estimated 130,000-geek culture aficionados are attending San Diego Comic-Con 2016 alone. Highlights include Warner Bros. Pictures’ panel, promoting and discussing its DC Extended Universe, alongside presentations for numerous cult TV shows – in particular, the established heavyweights Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead – featuring some superstar special guests. While the inside of the convention center is packed full of panels, downtown San Diego is set to transform into a nerd’s dream paradise. From parties to midnight screenings and gaming lounges, there are tons of events for attendees on a tight budget – and now, Lyft has added another limited-time opportunity that is worthy of a spot on any super-fan’s schedule. If you’re in the San Diego area from Thurs 7/21 – Sun 7/24, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., then there’s no question on who you’re gonna’ call as Lyft is offering passengers the opportunity to take a ride in the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 for free.

Simply toggle into ‘Ghost Mode’ on the transportation app and request a pick-up in either the original Ecto-1, or one of the various custom replicas, and keep your fingers (and toes) firmly crossed for something strange to turn up in your neighbourhood. This news follows the recent release of the all-new Ghostbusters reboot. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the four lead characters who start a ghost-capturing business in New York City, the film opened in theaters on July 15 and now has grossed an earnest $69 million worldwide. In celebration of the Ghostbusters premiere, Lyft and Sony partnered up to deliver ‘Ghost Mode’ – including free rides in the Ecto-1 – in five cities nationwide over the 4th of July weekend. Fortunately, Slimer didn’t turn out to be the passengers designated driver this time around, though we’re certain that it would have made for a memorable hijinks jaunt. Lyft has previously surprised passengers with memorable in-car experiences for the Back to the Future and The Walking Dead franchises, offering commuters the chance to take a trip in a DeLorean or take on the challenge of surviving a zombie-themed ride, respectively.

However, with the company’s promos gaining publicity and growing in popularity, their latest spooktacular Ecto-1 expedition is not guaranteed or advised for anyone who needs to arrive somewhere under time constraints. Ghostbusters is now playing in theaters.Have some .40 cal shell casings sitting around with nothing to do? How about some bullet earbuds? If you’ve ever wondered about the DIY community over at imgur, the top comment, by a large margin, is, “All of these tools would cost so much more than just buying the headphones” Here’s something [Lewin] sent in. It’s a USB cable, with a type A connector on one end, and a type A connector on the other end. There is no circuitry anywhere in this cable. This is prohibited by the USB Implementors Forum, so if you have any idea what this thing is for, drop a note in the comments. Attention interesting people in Boston. There’s a lecture series this Tuesday on Artificial Consciousness and Revolutionizing Medical Device Design.

This is part two in a series that Hackaday writer [Gregory L. Charvat] has been working with. Talks include mixed signal ASIC design, and artificial consciousness as a state of matter. Free event, open bar, and you get to meet (other) interesting people. It’s the 30th anniversary, and to celebrate the event [Luca] is making a custom collectors edition with the BluRay and something very special: the Lego ECTO-1. Let’s say you need to store the number of days in each month in a program somewhere. You could look it up in the Time Zone Database, but that’s far too easy. How about a lookup table, or just a freakin’ array with 12 entries? What is this, amateur hour? No, the proper way of remembering the number of days in each month is some bizarre piece-wise function. It is: f(x) = 28 + (x + ⌊x⁄8⌋) mod 2 + 2 mod x + 2 ⌊1⁄x⌋. At least the comments are interesting. Arduinos were sold in the 70s! Shocking, yes, but don’t worry, time travel was involved. Here’s a still from Predestination, in theatres Jan 9, rated R, hail corporate.

- 11 months 6 days ago Vehicles are physical LEGO toys that represent playable vehicles in the game. Placing a vehicle toy on the Toy Pad brings that vehicle into the game. Studs may be spent to upgrade vehicles and unlock "rebuild" versions of the vehicle. Once unlocked, rebuild versions of a vehicle may be purchased with studs and gold bricks. Once purchased, the player receives a building booklet with instructions on how to reconfigure the physical toy into the rebuild version of the vehicle. It is of course not necessary to actually rebuild the physical toy. As long as the upgrade is saved to the Toy Tag, the rebuild vehicle will appear in the game. We're sorry, but we could not fulfill your request for /2016/02/05/ghostbusters-lego-is-coming-with-the-new-movie/ on this server. Due in June, and priced at $50, it'll include an improved Ecto-1 model and four minifigs, of whom Egon is easily the highlight. The New York Toy Fair was this weekend, and that meant a close look at some of the hottest toys heading to stores this fall.

Sure, a lot of them were “toys” for “kids,” but collector geeks like myself have plenty to look forward to. I toured both Toy Fair proper and Hasbro’s separate toy showroom to find the coolest upcoming collectibles to look forward to. We loved Hasbro’s Titan-class Metroplex, and he’s getting a beefy brother. Fortress Maximus (FortMax if you’re a Transformers nerd) is big, blue, two feet tall, and becomes an Autobot city. He’s also part of the new Titans Return line, which means his head is a separate Transformer, Cerebros, who itself has a head that’s a separate Titanmaster Transformer that can be swapped out with others. Ghostbusters 3 is coming, and it might not suck. LEGO’s newest Ghostbusters set certainly doesn’t. It’s an updated version of the ECTO-1 the company launched a few years ago, with the new cast in minifig form, along with the ECTO-2 motorcycle. With Chris Hemsworth’s character on the bike, because every long-awaited franchise sequel apparently needs an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in it.

It doesn’t matter if Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still canon or not with Disney running Star Wars now. Darth Revan was great, and this is one of the most detailed action figures of him yet. Six-inch tall, dual lightsaber-wielding Sith lord with damaged armor, frayed cloak, and mask that’s way cooler than Kylo Ren’s. Metal Gear Solid V was great, and the Sahelanthropus Metal Gear was badass. Too bad what happened to it was a huge loose thread only tied up if you watched the animatics of the planned third chapter in the game, but let’s not dwell on what Konami could have done. What matters is that Square Enix is putting out a sweet model kit version of Sahelanthropus, joining its earlier kits of Metal Gear REX and Metal Gear RAY. Bandai-Tamashii Nations has been expanding its SH Figuarts line of Mari figures heavily. It started with Mario and some dioramas, and now we have Yoshi, Luigi, Fire Mario, and Boo/Koopa/Bullet Bill packs. Now Bowser himself is getting an SH Figuarts figure, and he’s joined by a Hammer Brother and Lakitu in a new enemy pack.

It’s like Super Mario Maker in real life. Nerf keeps getting more intense. Sure, there’s the Rival series that borders on Airsoft/paintball, but even dartslingers are going crazy. The new Hyperfire rifle is the fastest Nerf gun yet, capable of firing five darts per second. That’s almost double the firing rate of the previous record holder, the Nerf Rapidstrike. McFarlane Toys took an adult spin on Lego blocks with its The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones construction sets, and now it’s moving into indie horror video games with Five Nights at Freddy’s sets. Did you want to build your own Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza? Now you can, complete with possessed animatronic monsters that totally won’t skin your Lego minifigs and wear them as suits. NECA’s apparently wrung out all of the movie-franchises-with-video-game-palettes it can, because it’s moving into straight video-game-franchises-with-video-game-palettes. Sure, Bill and Lance might be slightly resculpted recolors of NECA’s Rambo figure, but those blue and orange pants and headbands, spread shot weapon effects, and floating weapon drop accessory make this one sweet-looking duo.

Bill and Lance fought freaking aliens. Have you read One-Punch Man or seen the anime? It’s an amazing combination of comedy and ridiculously over-the-top action, and Saitama himself is the answer to the long-asked question of who would win in a fight between Superman and Goku. Good Smile hasn’t released an on-model, human-proportioned Figma version of Saitama yet, but the cute Nenodoroid version (already out), along with his cyborg kohai Genos (coming soon), strangely fit with the manga and anime’s art style. Add some SH Figuarts explosion and crater effect sets, and you can have some sick chibi battles.Hasbro’s finally making a line of articular, detailed, collectible Friendship is Magic figures. Think Star Wars: The Black Series for My Little Pony. And it includes Celestia and Nightmare Moon figures that look like they would be amazing on the side of a van. Fun fact: The voice actresses of Pinkie Pie and The Great and Powerful Trixie, Andrea Libman and Kathleen Barr, also voiced young AndrAIa and Dot Matrix on Reboot.

This is a really specific thing, but it appeals to me as an amateur numismatist. Shire Post Mint is a small, privately owned mint that manufactures coins from fantasy series. You’ve probably already seen coins from Lord of the Rings from WETA Workshop and coins from Harry Potter from The Noble Collection, but these are different, like the difference between proof and uncirculated sets. Shire Post goes to the source of the series, getting the book licenses from Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Conan the Barbarian, and Kingkiller Chronicle. It works with the authors (who are still alive, or pores over the descriptions in older stories) to design coins that would be used in those universes. Then it mints them out of real metal, often pure, using custom die to stamp fantasy coins as if they were real money. Pure copper Hyborean coins, pure iron Coin of the Faceless Man, pure silver Tar Valon marks — you name it. They’re built to be handled and will last much longer jangling in pockets or passing through fingers than any of the movie-licensed fantasy coins you’ll find made of zinc alloy.
