By Katie DillonSan Diego Local Expert March 5, 2015 Unveiling of the Death Star — Photo courtesy of LEGOLAND California Star Wars and LEGOs are two great things that go even better together. And, at LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad, they've been paired since 2011 at LEGO Star Wars Miniland. But a brand new addition is generating quite a bit of excitement. On March 4, 2015, a LEGO Death Star was unveiled to the public as the latest addition to Star Wars Miniland and just in time for Star Wars Days, a special event at the park that happens each spring, this year during the weekend of March 7 and 8. As you might expect, the Death Star model is gigantic, spanning eight feet wide and 13 feet high, weighing more than 1900 pounds. Featuring a planet-destroying super laser, the massive LEGO model is made out of more than 500,000 LEGO bricks. It's so big that they installed a metal skeleton on the inside to hold everything in place, and it currently holds the title as the largest model in the park.

Darth Vader and Stormtroopers in front of the Death Star — Photo courtesy of LEGOLAND California Do you remember the scene from the Star Wars movie where Luke Skywalker flew his X-wing fighter into the trench and eventually destroyed the Death Star? A display of this scene is included. However, the design of the Death Star stems from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and includes six animated Turbo Laser Turrets and LEGO starship models built out of more than 20,000 LEGO bricks. Building stations will surround the Death Star, where guests may create their own LEGO starships as X-Wings, Tie Fighters and Y-Wings circle overhead. The unveiling of the Death Star happened in anticipation of the annual Star Wars Days events at LEGOLAND on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8. During these two days, guests can come face to face with favorite Star Wars characters in LEGO form, including the infamous Darth Vader minifigure. They'll test Star Wars knowledge during a round of Jedi Trivia, join in a Star Wars costume contest and participate in a galactic family LEGO building challenge. Guests may also visit the LEGO Fan Gallery to admire the LEGO Star Wars creations and photography created by LEGO fans. Admission to Star Wars Miniland and Star Wars Days is included with general admission to LEGOLAND California. The park is typically geared toward families with kids that are ages two to 12. Don't forget to visit SEA LIFE Aquarium and LEGOLAND California's two water parks, just steps away from the main park. Remember, in the LEGO realm, everything is awesome . . . even the Death Star with all of its bad guy might. Can you even imagine how much time and effort it took to build? Well, I’ll tell you. It took 15 model makers three months to build it and it weighs about 1,900 pounds. It may not fire lasers to obliterate planets, but if this thing fell on you, the result would be the same. So it is deadly. It will be part of the “finale” for the Star Wars Miniland Model Display, which also features X-Wings and TIE fighters in battle. If you find yourself there as a guest, you will even be able to trigger special sound and light effects, which is pretty cool. You can see it in LEGOLand Windsor when the exhibit opens on March 11. The video is a time-lapse video of the build.

The rest of the model display looks pretty cool too. You can catch some glimpses in the video. [via Comic Book Resources via Nerd Approved] More from Awesomer Media... Nobody likes to do chores, but even a starship needs to be swept and dusted to ensure those grey space corridors are dust free for photoshoots.

This fun little scene by TBB contributor Jen Spencer shows some Brooma and Waita droids helping out with the chores, albeit with a general lack of enthusiasm for their task. Jen’s little droids are adorable, with their cute pot bellies and Kardishan-esque booties. The part used for their ‘assets’ is the dark orange 2×2 curved top brick, which is also the seed part in the ongoing ABS Challenge contest. And did you spot the ingeniously subtle use of the huge Airplane wing parts forming the walls and doorway? The comical posing of the droids really makes this little scene for me; the Waita droid at the end seems to be struggling with his heavy plate of fruit. The poor Brooma droid on the lower floor is having to deal with a messy Cola spillage. I hope he has called for some back-up, ideally droids bearing mops and buckets! The biggest LEGO Star Wars set currently made is 75159 Death Star, and The Brothers Brick is giving away one copy of this massive 4,016-piece set to celebrate our readers!

OTHER NEWS: There was a massive amount of LEGO news from other places around the web this week. Here are a few items we noticed and thought you might enjoy. Merry Christmas, dear readers! Here at the Brothers Brick compound, all the little doors on our three LEGO Advent calendars have now been opened, their bricky contents sit resplendent upon the mantelpiece, while the empty boxes burn in the fireplace, creating a warm glow upon our faces …or maybe that’s just the eggnog. Before the Lemur began distributing our Secret Santa gifts (they’re all socks, they’re always socks) he reminded us to vote on the 46 entries in our Create-a-calendar building contest.

As always, we were blown away by your ingenuity and skill. But there can only be three winners, and here they are… Indiana Jones by Charis Stella Futurama by Sam Beattie Classic Space by Andreas Lenander Thank you again to everyone who took part. And to the winners, congratulations! We’ll be sending you your holiday-themed prize sets soon. We’re just sorry they can’t be sitting there under your tree already. And happy holidays to you all. The Brothers Brick’s Facebook page recently passed 100,000 followers, making it the most popular LEGO fan page on Facebook. While our sympathies here at TBB lie with the Rebellion, we acknowledge that this milestone just might make us the Death Star of LEGO blogs. It’s all very confusing for us, so here’s a Death Star that’s also a BB-8 in TBB colors giving a thumbs up. If big numbers and deeply silly mashups don’t make you as giddy as they seem to make us, perhaps a chance at winning the new 75159 Death Star will instead!

Enter to win by January 20th, 2017. You can enter to win from this link, or by clicking the Contests section on our Facebook page. The winner will also receive a snazzy green (of course) TBB logo T-shirt, stickers, and other swag. This is a friendly reminder that the Brothers Brick Create-a-calendar building contest ends at midnight this Saturday, December 17th. After that, judging will begin so that we can announce winners on Christmas Day. We’ve already seen some great entries in the contest Flickr group, so now you know what you’re up against! There are some cool prizes to be won, so dream up a theme and get building those tiny Advent calendar models today. The other side to this year’s MOC Olympics finale madness was built by none other than Slovenian builder Deus Otiosus. Check out this amazingly detailed and rather mossy arena. The crumbling brickwork and throne are quite impressive, but my favorite details are the wonderfully expressive brick-built characters and the and fire-breathing dragon.

Just look at that cone of flame erupting from the lizard beast’s mouth! I think that the character sitting on the throne looks more jester than king, but that only adds to the madness of this LEGO creation. Deus Otiosus’s opponent in this LEGO duel to the death is W. Navarre, with his stupendous arena battle between a gladiator and a tiger. I certainly don’t envy the judges this year. To find out who was victorious, head over to MOCpages. The final round of battle of the 2016 MOC Olympics is here and the top two contestants have been thrown to the lions and forced to build spectacular scenes of gladiatorial combat. For his final entry, W. Navarre built a gladiator facing off against a fearsome man-eating tiger. The most impressive thing about this build is not the beautifully sculpted figures (though those are amazing!), but the fact that the entire scene is completely filled with LEGO. There’s so much texture and even a bit of gore, it feels like I’m sitting in the front row of the great Colosseum.
