I've spent months kicking this "Best" around. Considering all types of space lasers and sniper weapons and over-powered pistols. But no matter how many other weapons I consider, I always keep coming back to an antique Second World War battle rifle. It might not be the most obvious choice for Best Video Game Gun, but hear me out. Unlike a lot of the other obvious favourites for a title like this, the M1 — which has featured in over a dozen blockbuster video games — was a real historical weapon, not the product of some video game studio's imagination. So in theory it should be boring, with a set of limitations that make it nowhere near as cool as something like a pulse rifle or rail gun. Yet it's exactly those limitations that make this such a unique, versatile and strategic video game killing machine. Developed in the 1920s, and entering service with the US Army in 1936, the M1 was the backbone of American infantry forces in the Second World War. Unlike other rifles of the time, which were bolt-action and required manual reloading after each shot, the semi-automatic M1 could fire eight rounds uninterrupted, after which you'd hear the rifle's trademark "ping" as the empty clip was automatically ejected.

It was rugged, it was accurate and it could put a lot more fire onto the battlefield than standard German or Japanese rifles could. This made it one of the most beloved (and important) rifles of the modern military era. Note: the exact characteristics of the weapon obviously vary from title to title, but there are a handful of "truths" that seem to apply to depictions of the Garand across video games. The M1's representation in video games is just as memorable. It's the quintessential battle rifle: deadly in the hands of the patient at mid/long range (thanks to its accuracy and .30 cal rounds), but also capable of filling close, confined spaces (like a room full of virtual Nazis) with lead in a pinch. All of which makes the Garand an excellent weapon. But it's a quirk of the M1's clip that really sets it apart. See, the Garand featured what's called an en bloc clip (pictured above), which basically means the bullets and clip came as a package deal. The shooter fires all eight rounds, and when the clip is empty, it's ejected automatically.

In the real world it's possible to pop the clip back out manually (though it's not common, since loose rounds can't easily be re-inserted into a clip), but most games take a far simpler and stricter line: in titles like Call of Duty and Medal of Honour, you just can't reload halfway through a clip. You need to fire all eight rounds before the gun reloads itself. In real life, this wasn't that big a deal. But in video games, where every other gun on earth (and in space) can magically rescue the bullets in an unspent clip when you swap in a new one, returning them to your stash, the use of the M1 requires strategy. Standard practice in a first-person shooter is to reload before and/or after every engagement, so that you know you've got a full clip ready when the bullets start flying. With the Garand, this is impossible! You'd have to fire all the remaining rounds in a clip into the dirt just to reload a fresh one, and if you did that you'd be out of ammo in no time. Which sounds like a pain!

But the power and versatility of the M1 is such that the adjustments you have to make to your playstyle are more than worth it. The Garand forces you, more than any other weapon in video games, to fight smart. To plan ahead, and to really get to know the weaknesses of this rifle, so that you can make the most of its strengths. If you're entering a room and you've only got three rounds left, you can't go in guns blazing. You need to consider your approach and be ready ahead of time to switch to a secondary weapon. If you're in the middle of a firefight and you've just reloaded, you only have eight rounds to keep track of, so you're able to actually count them as you pop them off, without needing to even look at your HUD. This informs your targeting, your movement, everything. This is what I love most about the Garand. There are plenty of guns that rival it for stopping power, or range, or ease of use, but they don't saddle that twitch-finger power with a need for planning. It's the thinking man's rifle.

Or, you know, maybe I just love that "ping"... The Bests are Kotaku's picks for the best things on (or off) the internet. Get More White House to Propose Slashing Agency Budgets: Officials President Donald Trump has no plans to cut Social Security or Medicare, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Sunday. Capitol Hill aides say the White House is moving to propose slashing cuts to longtime Republican targets like the Environmental Protection Agency as it prepares its budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The White House budget office will send agencies proposed levels for the 2018 budget year on Monday, according to the aides. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss nonpublic information and a sensitive process. Get More Bush Favors 'Welcoming' Immigration Policy, Defends Media Former President George W. Bush said he believes in a "welcoming" immigration policy, called freedom of religion a bedrock freedom, and forcefully defended the media as "indispensable to democracy," speaking out Monday in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. President Donald Trump is expected to issue this week a revised version of his controversial travel ban on people from seven majority-Muslim countries.

Bush did not make an endorsement in the presidential election and did not vote for president, a spokesman has said. "Today" host Matt Lauer asked Bush several questions about Trump and his policies, and while Bush didn't criticize the president, whom he noted has been in office for just one month, he did offer positions on religion, immigration, the fight against ISIS and the press that run at odds with views Trump has recently espoused. Veterinarians with the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, outside Binghamton, said April is experiencing increased belly movement. The happy and healthy mother-to-be has also started to produce milk and shed a few droplets during a Saturday evening examination.

Watch »Father of Navy SEAL Killed in Raid Refused to Meet Trump The father of a Navy SEAL killed during an anti-terrorism raid in Yemen is demanding an investigation into its planning and criticized the Trump administration for its timing. Bill Owens told The Miami Herald in a story published Sunday that he refused to meet with President Donald Trump when both came to Dover Air Force Base to receive the casket carrying his son, Chief Special Warfare Officer William ``Ryan'' Owens. "I want an investigation,'' said Owens, a retired Fort Lauderdale police detective and veteran. "The government owes my son an investigation.'' Get More Cosby to Ask Judge for Outside Jury for Criminal Trial Actor Bill Cosby is set to return to a Pennsylvania courtroom Monday to ask a judge to bring in outside jurors in his criminal sex assault case. The hearing comes after the trial judge Friday ruled that only one other accuser can testify at the scheduled June trial. Prosecutors had asked that 13 other accusers testify to support charges that Cosby drugged and molested a former Temple University employee at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

Get More Man Wounded in Deadly Kansas Bar Shooting Speaks at Vigil An Indian man who was shot and wounded at a bar in suburban Kansas City last week says he wished the killing of his best friend during the attack had all been a dream, but that the incident, apparently fueled by racism, "doesn't reflect the true spirit of Kansas." Alok Madasani, 32, addressed a crowd of hundreds during a vigil Sunday night at the Ball Conference Center in Olathe, Kansas. He described the fatal shooting of his friend and co-worker, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, Wednesday as "a senseless crime," the Kansas City Star reported. "The main reason why I am here is that's what my best friend, Srinivas, would have done," Madasani said. "He would have been here for me." Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz are the two accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers who controlled the envelopes at the 89th Academy Awards. Before the big event, they talked about their job, which Ruiz called a "big responsibility."

She added that they even memorize the winners so they can make sure the right names are called onstage. Watch »US Anti-ISIS Strategy May Mean Deeper Involvement in Syria A new military strategy to meet President Donald Trump's demand to "obliterate" the Islamic State group is likely to deepen U.S. military involvement in Syria, possibly with more ground troops, even as the current U.S. approach in Iraq appears to be working and will require fewer changes. But recommendations due at the White House on Monday are likely to increase emphasis on nonmilitary elements of the campaign already underway, such as efforts to squeeze IS finances, limit the group's recruiting and counter IS propaganda that is credited with inspiring recent violence in the U.S. and Europe. One official with knowledge of the recommendations said the report would present a broad overview of options as a starting point for a more detailed internal discussion. The official wasn't authorized to speak to reporters about the contents of the document and demanded anonymity

Get More Takata Guilty Plea Expected in Cover-Up of Air Bag Troubles Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corp. is expected to plead guilty Monday to a criminal charge and agree to a $1 billion penalty for concealing a deadly air bag inflator problem. Company representatives are scheduled to be in U.S. District Court in Detroit Monday afternoon. The company agreed last month to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud. Three executives also have been indicted on charges that they falsified test reports. Takata inflators can explode with too much force, spewing shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 16 people have been killed worldwide and more than 180 have been hurt. Bao Bao, the American-born panda, started settling into her new home in southwest China on Thursday where she will eventually join a breeding program after a period of quarantine. Bao Bao was born at the National Zoo in Washington to panda parents on loan from China. Under an agreement between China and the US, such panda cubs must be returned to China before they are four years old, the earliest age at which they might begin breeding.

The three-year-old landed in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan province on Wednesday after a 16-hour flight in a Boeing 777 emblazoned with a picture of a giant bamboo-eating panda. Transported to the nearby Dujiangyan panda breeding base, Bao Bao emerged from her crate looking somewhat timid and curious, but soon settled in with a snack of fresh bamboo, according to a news release from the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas. On Thursday breeders and officials were seen inspecting Bao Bao as she walked around her enclosure. They said some time would be needed for the panda to acquaint herself with her new keepers. Bao Bao, whose name means "precious" or "treasure," will first go through a month-long quarantine at the Dujiangyan base, the research centre said.
