Last year I posted a list of LEGO events in the UK (2015) on my personal blog which was popular way beyond my expectations (clearly, there are a lot of LEGO fans in the UK!). So, this year (well, several months in advance!), I’ve started compiling a new list of AFOL/LEGO events in the UK in 2016. This is really handy for LEGO fans of any age, but especially Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) whose memory is not quite a good as it used to be – I really struggle to remember dates for these, and don’t want to double-book if I can avoid it! And for those of you interested, the photo above is from my exhibit at Bricktastic 2015 in Manchester. Some of these events aren’t just LEGO (!), but feature other exhibits too. I’ve tried to mark these where possible. As always, always check with the organisers before traveling any distance, and details (dates/times/attractions/prices) are subject to change! This time of year is a quiet one for LEGO events. I think this late summer period is the busiest for LEGO exhibitions, etc, in the UK (for me, at least!).

There's a risk any company can struggle, so learn to Shop Safely. FREE 5 Lego for kids EVERY MONTHRight. Lego's definitely the best kids' toy, and we know a few adults who are fans too. We won't hear any arguing that it's Barbie, Playdoh or Xbox - Lego wins it hands down (OK, OK, that's just my opinion - MSE Charlotte). But there's an issue which we can't block out - Lego can be SO expensive. So hopefully this deal will help you out. If you're between six and 14 (sorry grown-ups, this one isn't for you, so please let your kids know!), go into your nearest official Lego store (there's more info on where below) on the first Thursday of every month between 4-6pm to take part in the Lego Mini Build. Get there as soon as you can, as stock is limited to 200-300 models per store (depending on size and location), and it's first come, first served. Staff  will  show your kids how to make the model, which Lego told us is worth around £5 (but it's not for sale). Once it's been made - it should take about 10-15 mins - the kids can take it home for free.

The models are different each month, and you don't know what you're going to get till you get in there. More info Participating stores include: Bluewater, Brighton, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester Arndale, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Sheffield Meadowhall, Watford and both London Westfield centres. FREE Batman Lego buildIf you're planning to visit a Toys 'R' Us store (find your nearest) this weekend, from 11am to 1pm on Sat 11 Feb you could build and take home a mini Batman Batmobile Lego toy (while stocks last). As the similar monthly toy builds at the Lego Store are so popular, it's best to arrive early to maximise your chances of grabbing a spot. It's completely free to build, there's no Robin necessary... 'Free' 5 Lego with 1.50 paperBuy a copy of The Times (£1.50) on Sat 11 Feb and you'll find a voucher inside for a free Lego toy to be redeemed the same day. Saturday's freebie is Batman in the Phantom Zone (model no 30522), which includes a Batman minifigure and drone.

Similar sets are usually priced at about £4.99 each. How to get it Show the voucher found in the paper at Martin's or McColls newsagents (find your nearest) before closing on the day you bought the paper to claim your freebie. If your local store has run out, or you can't get to a newsagents, you can also pay £2.45 P&P and order it online if that's more convenient for you. There's also a Lego Batman activity book and sticker set available for £1.99 postage. As usual with these freebies, it's a "while stocks last" situation, we don't know how many each store's likely to have - so try to get there early in the day to avoid missing out. It's limited to one freebie per person. More info Photocopies, damaged or defaced vouchers won't be accepted. Lego advent calendars from 19* If you're after an advent calendar a little brick different from the usual chocolate ones, these Lego calendars are filled with 24 small kits - from Christmas trees to snow ploughs and stormtroopers.

There are three calendars to choose from, and you can buy them direct from Lego as well as several major retailers, but here's the cheapest we could find them online on Wed 9 Nov: Lego Friends calendar* (model no 41131) - £18.97 at Tesco Direct, £19.99 on Lego's website. Lego City calendar* (model no 60133) - £19.97 at Asda George, £19.99 on Lego's website. Lego Star Wars calendar* (model no 75146) - £19.97 at Asda George, £24.99 on Lego's website. These are likely to be popular and, although we've asked Asda to tell us, we don't know how many are available at this price - so if it's something you want, go quick. The Lego Shop 20% offIf you go online to The Lego Shop, you can get 20% off selected sets for Black Friday until Mon 28 Nov. Delivery's £3.95 or free on orders over £50. Good deals we found at 11.50am on Fri 25 Nov include: £15.99 Minecraft The Iron Golem set (21123) - norm £19.99 (next cheapest we found, £18.99 at John Lewis).

If you're a Lego VIP card member (it's free to join) you can get free delivery on orders over £30 until Sun 18 Dec Important: Don’t allow yourself to be taken in by the hype around Black Friday and sucked into buying something you don’t need or can’t afford. And always do your own price comparisons to ensure you are getting the best deal possible – don’t just take a retailer’s word for it. For the rest of our Black Friday deals and analysis, see our Black Friday 2016 Deals page. 'Free' 5 Lego with 1-1.70 paper*Buy a Daily Mail (£1) on Sat 15 Oct, or a Mail On Sunday (£1.70) on Sun 16 Oct, and you'll find a voucher inside each for a free Lego toy to be redeemed the same day.

Saturday's freebie is Ninjago Kai's Mini Dragon (model no 30422) and Sunday's is Disney Frozen Olaf 'Summertime Fun' (30397). Both sets are currently being sold at Toys 'R' Us for £4.99 each. In England, Scotland and Wales, show the voucher at WHSmith* (high street branches, not stations/airports) before closing on the day you bought the paper. Sunday's voucher can also be redeemed at Tesco Express* if that's more convenient for you than WHSmith. In Northern Ireland, you can get the toys at Eason stores. As usual with these freebies, it's a "while stocks last" situation, and although we've been told there'll initially be 200,000 of each toy, we don't know how many each store's likely to have - so try to get there early in the day to avoid missing out. If you're after two of the same toy, you could buy one of the newspapers twice. However, each freebie's limited to one per person, so you may not be allowed to collect two of them yourself. Before spending, use Martin's Mantras.
