All Aboard photography by MichelleMany of today’s kids have never traveled on traditional trains, but they still find them fascinating. A new train exhibit at the i.d.e.a. Museum in Mesa lets kids explore train-related facts and history and experience train-related art and building activities.
The “All Aboard Trains” exhibition, which continues through Jan. 24, also features several train artifacts. Visitors can enjoy artists’ works inspired by various types of trains, from steam engines to modern-day subways. It’s a fun way to expose children to different types of artwork, including digital photography, paintings, drawings and more. Some is by local artists. Several display cases contain artifacts—including a bell, headlight and whistle—from Southern Pacific Engine #2355. All were provided by Save Our Train, an organization dedicated to the restoration of #2355, located at Pioneer Park in Mesa. Another case holds switch keys, time booklets, a brass telegraph machine and more. The exhibition also features several works related to the Valley Metro light rail, which recently opened a new extension in Central Mesa. Visitors can see a model of a light rail train and digital art created by Mesa artist Jaime Glasser, along with works by New York artists who depict the city’s subway system.
